La DACCS (capture directe de CO₂ atmosphérique et séquestration) est une technologie qui permet de retirer du CO₂ de l'atmosphère et d'en stocker durablement le carbone dans le sous-sol. Mais cette approche soulève de nombreuses questions

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plays the same role in aviation as CCS/BECCS/DACCS play for other fossil-fuelled sectors: more a stalling tactic than solution. Good engineers work on SAF, but CEOs/politicians/etc deliberately mis-sell their role in mitigation.

The problem with DACCS is the energy additionality problem. If we build in gt of CO2 removal, we're adding TWh of clean Energy demand on top of current replacement and transition goals

No great answer to this beyond taxpayer but a utility style rate system plus public finance could probably shave off 10-15% of the cost which would be nice. I fantasize about some peak load management + daccs business model but that might be a fantasy. The problem is geoengineering will be too cheap

It probably varies case-by-case.

The core challenge with CDR is not the technology, but the scale. As a general rule, either people don't know that or it is lip service...

Do I think Oxy invests in DACCS to help the steel sector in 2050? They invest to continue BAU, I would say.

📉 Prices are going down: the average price decreased by 35% from $490 in 2023 to $320 in 2024 with huge variations for some technologies like DACCS ($100-$2,000/t). 7/10

In a new report published today we (CONCITO) argue that the willingness to pay in aviation (for insanely expensive e-fuels) is better used on DACCS / CDR: bsky.app/profile/did:... cc @karstencapion.bsky.social
🛫 More routes to climate-neutral aviation! 🛫

In a new CONCITO paper we argue for using green electricity and captured CO2 separately, as:
- The climate benefit is double that of e-kerosene
- This displaces more fossil fuel
- It is more cost efficient.

Novel CDR credits like biochar, BECCS & DAC saw major growth in 2023. But across all methods, sold credits still far outpace delivery. A snapshot from #StateOfCDR, edition 2 shows where the voluntary carbon market is heading. Explore more in Chapter 4: www.stateofcdr.org/edition-2-re...

At this point, the carbon offsets that provide irrefutable benefits are when the polluter pays for an equal amount of CO2 to be removed and kept from going back into our polluted atmosphere via DACCS.

Anyways, while people are still flying and such I think they should try to remediate that damage.

I know that you don't have time to evaluate every DACCS company, but I just ran across this one that looks quite intriguing since it seems to be producing net-negative marine biofuel which would be a win/win for sure.

Just hoping that you don't jump on the bandwagon of people who don't comprehend climate science who are criticizing DACCS.
December 30, 2024 at 4:37 PM
Here are the levels of different CDR methods in the 1.5C scenarios (with no or low overshoot) assessed by the IPCC.

In 2050, the IEA NZE2050 has ~1GtCO2 BECCS and about 0.7GtCO2 DACCS.
October 24, 2023 at 9:14 AM
I think there could be a place for DACCS as part of a serious treatment of GHGs, if they cost less than SCC (i.e., use them to remove emissions that can’t be abated more cheaply by other means). But we should first do everything that costs less. And we’re not moving well on that front.
December 11, 2024 at 11:06 PM
I was hoping to get some response from people with expertise, but thanks. DACCS does not require hydroxides at all for many of the emerging technologies.

Most advanced DAC facilities use specialized filters to extract the CO₂ from the ambient air.

My favorite technology is biochar btw.
December 11, 2024 at 10:57 PM
However DACCS can still have a small role to balance remaining emissions and maybe more importantly, if airlines were required to have an fast increasing amount of synthetic fuels with carbon from DAC, the increased cost would dampen the demand for flights and make alternatives more attractive. 3/3
October 23, 2023 at 6:14 AM
Thank you for your comprehensive answer. I agree totally that those "offsets" which airlines provide are useless (already evident by their low price - if solving the problem was really so cheap we'd already done it). DACCS also has some of the issues, like those mentioned in your post. 1/3
October 23, 2023 at 6:13 AM
