Found out about this today, and signed up immediately (on discovering, happily, that *ex*-academics are also welcome :) )

Have a feeling it's going to be of interest to a lot of friends on here

We can fight this thing, but we have to do it together - through community, coalition and solidarity

me at work: the quantification, datafication and surveillance of childhood is a troubling trend, which the recent nursery app hack lays bare
me at home: i simply must know exactly when the baby went to sleep at nursery and see adorable pictures of him playing with his little friends

My fellow caregivers, I'd like to suggest the datafication and surveillance of our children is, in fact, not worth it.
A parent with a child at the hacked nursery chain "viewed the cyber-attack as an inherent risk of using any app, and considered the opportunity to gain real-time information on his child, such as what they had eaten, worth it" 🤔

The platformization and datafication of early childhood is going great for data extractive startups and hackers

"The software is widely used by other nurseries and childcare organisations, and it says on its website it is used by more than one million 'owners, managers, practitioners and families'"

The growing obsession with polls is yet another example of the damage that dataism (the new religion) and the datafication of everything are doing.

Purely-chosen measures and metrics are made of perverse incentives.

I am fortunate to be working with a great doctoral student who is developing data literacy interventions for students through a datafication lens. Your study will be of much interest and use to him.

I think, this is what 'AI in the workplace' is about, not ChatGPT.

And I think the data practices examined in this single case study provide a solid basis to discuss many of the most pressing issues regarding the datafication of work.

With the commodification/fetishisation of data, how can humans protect themselves from the datafication of our verbal, spatial and social behavior (by oligarchs through their neo-feudal subscriptions)? (& What behaviour-data, which we can withhold, would be of most value in the dataconomy?)

I find it fascinating- and sad- to see the datafication of schools extend to what I call a “temu MBA” style- leaders cosplaying as what they imagine business leaders do. So vanity metrics, dashboards, slide decks. Output over outcomes. We used to encourage creativity, now we suppress it
