Pre-written 5-page backstories are fine…

…but watching a character discover their backstory through symbolic prompts?

That’s storytelling magic.

I wrote about it here:

The Illusion of Knowing - MarkEzraStokes.com
Imagine for a moment that you’re in a dark-but-candlelit room, across a modest table from a wizened woman. She squints at oversized cards spread across the navy-felted table, and she begins to speak: “Ah yes… I see a decision weighing on you…” You hang on to her every word. What if this same narrative trick was used at your TTRPG table?

One of my favorite parts of running Ealdsmyth:
Players reveal deeper character truths without needing heavy backstory dumps.

Dreams, symbols, echoes—they do the work.

I explore why this works so well here:

Tarot cards → d20 tables.

Open-ended statements → “Tell me what your character notices.”

Cold reads → flashback seeds.

Fortuneteller tools map surprisingly well to TTRPG Stewarding.

Here’s how:

A secret of fortunetellers: the magic isn’t knowing.
It’s inviting meaning.

Ealdsmyth Stewards use the same principles to help players uncover resonant character truths.

Fortunetellers use symbols, inference, and leading cues… not to know, but to help others reveal.

Stewards in Ealdsmyth do the same to draw out player truth through story.

Ever notice how a fortuneteller’s “open-ended statements” work because we fill in the meaning?

Ealdsmyth lets Stewards do the same—but ethically, to empower players instead of deceive them.

I unpacked the connection here:

From Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood to Ealdsmyth’s campfire stories, one thread remains:
Compassion is the truest magic.

Read why that belief still shapes my work today:

When I was a kid, I had a happy place: It was peaceful, it was slow-moving, and it involved a geriatric changing into a sweater before feeding the fish and playing with a train. My happy place was Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Imagine teaching resilience through dragons, kindness through quests, and empathy through shared story.

That’s where Mister Rogers meets the tabletop.

Fred Rogers once said, “The space between the TV and the viewer is holy ground.”

The same is true of the space between the GM and their players.

Here’s how that shapes the games I design.

You can teach rules. You can plan plots.

But helping players feel safe enough to grow—that’s artistry.

It started with The Shifting Flame.

It deepened in The Path Divides.

It ends, and transforms, in The Flame Returns.

Thank you to everyone who’s traveled this arc with me!

How do you give your players closure at the end of a campaign?

For me, it’s all about reflection and resilience (both centerpieces of The Flame Returns).

This finale began as a simple “intro session.” It became a meditation on identity and endurance.

I wrote The Flame Returns to help groups reflect, not just roll dice.

I’m partial to the one my buddies and I created (Ealdsmyth) about a year ago. We kept it RP-friendly, rules lite and geared toward character personalization over traditional leveling up. That’s the only thing I play now.
August 20, 2025 at 9:51 PM
That “no null results” is a big one! We do the same thing with EALDSMYTH, because there’s nothing more frustrating than waiting 30 minutes for my turn, rolling low, and then being done with my turn.
August 20, 2025 at 8:09 PM
I’m glad to hear that! That endeavor to prioritize story over cumbersome rules was exactly why my buddies and I created Ealdsmyth.

You get to design your dream session:

– Your favorite TTRPG system
– Your ideal tone
– Your perfect table

What does it look like?
(And can I come?)

Hot take:

The system does matter.

You can have the best group in the world, but the rules shape the vibe.

What system has the best rules-to-feelings ratio?
