DUPAN represents Dutch eel traders, farmers, and fishers—the exact industry SEG certifies. SEG’s own documents show DUPAN embedded in SEG processes, especially writing restocking rules.

So let’s ask the questions the fishing community and public deserve answers to:
📍 Where did this happen?
Which rivers? Which regions? Which facilities?

“Critically endangered” is the final warning before extinction. Any organisation in this space must be transparent, accountable, and enforce compliance. SEG fails on every count, leaving a species at the edge of collapse with no credible protection.

Are companies still trading, marketing, or profiting from eel products while SEG allows expired certifications to appear valid on its system?

Policy implications: In France, 60% of the catch (~38 tons) is restocked, but many still die due to injuries. In the UK, some eels survive naturally, but restocking could save the abundance that would otherwise perish.

The money behind this trade is enormous. Illegal eel trafficking is one of the largest wildlife-crime markets on Earth, with hundreds of millions of euros worth of eels disappearing from Europe every year, under SEGs watch

As a result, millions of eels in UK waters are effectively left to perish each year — not because recovery is impossible, but because action is delayed.

When chefs like Andoni Luis Aduriz say “stop,”
when scientists say “stop,”
but certification bodies say “carry on” —
the question is simple:
Who is this system designed to protect?
Hint: it’s not the eel.

This certification gives cover to markets, restaurants, and distributors to keep selling eels while telling consumers everything is “responsible.”
It isn’t.
It directly contradicts scientific advice.

Across Europe, authorities react rather than control.
Regulatory frameworks are overwhelmed by the scale and economic gravity of the market, leaving enormous gaps for exploitation.

Romanticising eel consumption while the species is on life support isn’t cultural sensitivity — it’s industrial denial dressed up as tradition.

The outcome:
Ongoing exploitation of a critically endangered species — driven by industry, not science.
There is no accountable data supporting claims of 40% escapement.
No independent verification.
No audit trail.

This is classic greenwashing:
✔ conservation language
✔ legal paperwork
✔ selective statistics
❌ no transparent outcomes
❌ no proof of ecological benefit

Long-term French data show the same pattern:
Between 2011–2023, total restocking releases across all those years were ~37 tonnes combined.

That’s less than one single year’s “60% quota” on paper.

SEGs Charlatans

SEG is demanding the world overhaul eel trade rules… while their own certification scheme is suspended by ISEAL. You can’t shout about global accountability when your own system didn’t meet basic credibility requirements.

Survival after interception is rarely documented. Disease screening is minimal. Reintroduction protocols are murky. Conservation credibility demands transparency—and right now, it is missing entirely.

Non-certified eels are still legally traded, often exported overseas. Voluntary certification + opaque reporting = a massive blind spot, putting the European eel at continued risk despite the label

SEG updated this register on 11 Nov 2025, yet invalid passes are already included. Suspended by ISEAL, this group’s “certifications” are exposed as fake. Any edits won’t hide the truth — the data is undeniable.
