The team set up automated cameras in the forest in Mont Mégantic National Park. Daily photos allowed them to watch the sprouting of two common spring understorey plants, Trillium erectum (Red Trillium) and Erythronium americanum (Trout Lily) and watch for leaf-out from the trees above. (5/9)
The image shows a human hand gently holding a red trillium flower with three distinctive deep burgundy-red petals that display prominent leaf-like venation patterns. The flower has six white stamens with cream-colored anthers radiating from the center. Three green sepals are visible between the petals. The flower emerges from what appears to be the characteristic three-leaved whorl of the trillium plant. The background shows bright green forest understory vegetation, including what appear to be other woodland plants. The hand provides scale, showing this is a moderately-sized wildflower typical of spring ephemeral plants in deciduous forests.

Bonneville shooting stars (dodecatheon conjugens) and glacier lily (erythronium grandiflorum) Delighted to see these as we usually find them in a different area of Kananaskis beginning of June.

A cluster of 3 purple almost arrowhead shaped flowers on a green stem with the point of each flower being yellow then black. The flowers are in a field of assorted green foliage. The glacier lily has bright yellow petals that curl back on themselves, almost into a full circle while the pale yellow stamens hang down.

My first new find of the year was the STUNNING Midland fawnlily (Erythronium mesochoreum)! These are related to trout lilies (which I also adore), and their bulbs are edible. (But that doesn’t mean I endorse you digging all of them up for a snack!)

It is! I unfortunately have my camera roll 98% filled with critters when it comes to nature, but here’s the best I could find on the wildflower end of things! ^ ^
Tall Ironweed (Vernonia gigantea) with a really pretty vibrant purple hue with some light green vines creeping into them. Yellow Trout Lilies (Erythronium americanum) with a gorgeous bright yellow hue that contrast against the dead pale brown leaves on the flat ground. A tall, light but semi-bright pink phlox flower species that’s tall and presents the bundle of flowers in a whorled fashion. I’m not sure, but the leaves also look like they have a lanceolate shape with an opposite arrangement. The greenery and leaves below and behind the flowers are bright darkish green. Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis), a mostly white heart shaped flower with pink outer edges and some pink peeking out from the inside. It has dark waxy green leaves that are thrice divided into lacy, narrowly oblong to linear segments (it’s hard to describe but it almost looks like the segmentation that ferns develop but instead of the thin elegance they have, it’s almost like the turkey hands US children would make for thanksgiving. Still really pretty but just wider if that makes sense?). The flower is growing upwards from the forest floor which has several faded brown leaves littered across it so you can’t see the grass or the soil.

TROUT LILY Also called fawn lily and dog-tooth violet, Erythronium americanum forms low-growing colonies of brown-speckled foliage topped by yellow flowers with recurved petals. Emerging from underground corms, plants with twin leaves will flower; those with single leaves are sterile, though they should flower in subsequent years. Two views of Mt. Shuksan from Picture Lake when I was up snowshoeing a month ago the lake was still covered with snow significant melt out. the snow was quite soft today.
Avalanche Lily (Erythronium montanum) is one of the first harbingers of spring in the sub alpine meadows.

Scientists explore a possible link between earth tides and eruptions—Mount St. Helens blew just hours after a high tide.

Meanwhile, Skamania County begins presumptive death hearings for the missing. It’s the legal step that comes long after the emotional one.

Scientists note that Mount St. Helens erupted within hours of a high tide on May 18, but caution that there’s not enough data to draw firm conclusions. Published in the Oregon Journal, June 10, 1980. 花が終わっていて、葉もほとんど見えない状態だと、何だこれ？ですね。花が咲き終わった後のカタクリの実って、こんな感じなのかあと眺めてきました。山野では、どんどん勢いよく茂ってくる他の植物に紛れてしまい、この状態のカタクリを見つけるのは難しそう。
