Found an Adonis' Ladybird (Hippodamia variegata) on a rather scruffy urban flower bed in Waltham Abbey two days ago. I also saw one here in May; as it is rather scarce in my local area this unlikely spot is currently my most reliable location. #EssexWildlife #UKLadybirds

A careful search of Town Mead, Waltham Abbey produced three nymphs and 12 adult Striped Shieldbugs (Graphosoma italicum) in a large stand of Hemlock today. The best count of the year on this site, the warm sunshine encouraging them out to bask. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

Found four Striped Shieldbugs (Graphosoma italicum) in an area with scattered Hogweed on Roundhills estate, Waltham Abbey today. The first time I have checked this small sub population this year, still in the same area as 2024. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

Surprised to find a Spruce Cone Bug (Gastrodes abietum) sitting on my front door in Waltham Abbey a few days ago. Initially assumed it was the commoner Pine Cone Bug (G. grossipes) but pale sides to front of pronotum and first antennal segment not extending beyond head. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

Counted 37 nymphs and 60 adult Striped Shieldbugs (Graphosoma italicum) at Ninefields, Waltham Abbey today. This has been the primary population this year, numbers down in other areas and no new spread to other nearby habitat patches that I have been checking. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

Found a small number of Dogwood Aphids (Anoecia corni) on a dogwood shrub (Cornus) in a garden in Upshire, Essex yesterday. The presence of numerous 7-spot Ladybirds suggests the population may previously have been rather larger. #EssexWildlife

I have tapped Meadow Ladybird (Rhyzobius litura) out of a Euonymus shrub in my Waltham Abbey garden on 27th July and 8th, 10th and 24th August this year. This is an unusual amount but looking at the four photos I suspect only one individual might be involved. #EssexWildlife #InconspicuousLadybirds
