I insist you tell me what’s—’ She squirms, and twists away from him; his position between her thighs, his weight against her leg prevents her from turning over entirely, but she corkscrews just enough to bury her face in the pillows, still shaking. In his growing distress, G’raha reaches forward to pull her hands away by force if he must— But before he can do so, she shifts in such a way that reveals a flash of lips pursed in a barely restrained grin, eyes screwed tightly shut - and he realises the trembling which wracks her comes not from sobs, but quaking laughter. ‘Oh, gods…’ she moans plaintively, as though profoundly aggrieved. ‘Please don’t make me, Raha, it’s too…weird.’ G’raha sits back. His alarm is assuaged, but replaced only with confusion - a moment ago they were making love, and all was right with the world, and now he has completely lost his footing. What’s so funny? What is…weird?! When he fails to respond, Zefiris emerges fully from behind her fingers and looks up at him at last - and the crumpled, lost look he gives her must surely go straight to her heart, leaving her with no choice but honesty, however awkward. With her flushed face still half-buried in their blankets, she mutters her confession: ‘Came so hard it woke him up.’ His fluttering ears pin flat, now. What in seven hells is she talking about? Their neighbours? The cat? Not the cat, that makes no sense - the cat is half a world away, no doubt tormenting Ojika. Confusion - and just a hint of indignation - reign in him. ‘ “Him”? Who?!’ ‘For fuck’s sake, Raha!’ Zefiris laughs, retreating behind her hands again - mortified at his reaction, at the barest hint of jealousy warming his words. She peeks out at him, frowning with not-quite-mock exasperation as she states what should surely, as far as she is concerned, be quite obvious: ‘Ardbert.’ A pause, theatrically palpable, and G’raha’s eyes go wide. ‘Ohhh,’ he breathes. It was shamefully easy to forget the souls and fragments she sheltered, sometimes - and by Zefiris’ account, Ardbert had spent most of his time with her largely asleep, with the grave exception of Ultima Thule. Manifesting there alongside Midgardsormr to keep her safe and drive her on to the end had taken almost all that remained of him, and he had slumbered ever since. Until, apparently, now. It woke him up. Pondering that, the faint flush of exertion across G’raha cheeks begins to deepen into something more mortally crimson. Satisfied that they are at least now back on common ground - and equally embarrassed - Zefiris turns her attention inwards. She closes her eyes a moment, and a smile of a different flavour creeps across her face - this one altogether wicked. ‘He offers his commendations,’ she sniggers. Now it is G’raha’s turn to be mortified: more than anything, at the undeniable burst of pride that blooms in his chest at those words, no sooner felt than leaving him reeling in a heartfelt cringe. He too flees behind his hands. To be caught in the act was one thing - to be congratulated on his performance, another - but to realise his judge was also, technically, a participant… ‘Oh, gods…’ he echoes, and looks up at her through the curtain of his hair in appeal. She lies propped up on one arm, and the expression she greets him with is not one of expected sympathy. Instead, her well-loved lips are quirked in an unfamiliar, unmistakably cheeky grin, and G’raha knows instantly that someone else is looking out at him from behind her eyes. It is uncanny, but not in a way that makes him recoil. The man now giving him a cocky thumbs-up with his lifemate’s hand has, after all, been here all along.

It is a heady baptism, to rouse in the arms of a slumbering storm. He has slept but a moment - so tells the still-slick salt on his skin and hers, and her chest still heaving gently in quiescence. Yet he awakens renewed; body tingling with the pleasant ache of exertion - even his deadened limb of crystal seems to pulse faintly with the rhythm of her breath. Some lost fool’s pathetic fallacy, perhaps - but he cleaves to it like a mariner devout to his own superstitions, for he never thought to be so blessed. Here at the calm center, he drifts, drunk on sensation, and charts the subtle movements of her body in repose. The delicious tremble of long limbs, sheened and spent. The drift of her unbound hair tangled about them, matted and damp with exertion, pale ends brushing against him in a kiss of careless spray. The rosy flush of heated blood aglow beneath the seastorm of her skin - how could a mere blush, chased across cheeks and chest, be so profoundly erotic to him? And yet more than all of these it is her dreaming smile that draws him - slight and tremulous, unpractised…but with a hint of pride in its satisfied, bruised curl. Sure as any storm, she has no sense of her own power. Least of all that first time, days past: she had broken the lashes of her own self-despite and reached out her hand to him - and truth be told, he had almost failed to grasp it; his mind and body racked and frozen at the fathomless impossibility of such a thing: breathless, awed. With skin turned stone, that had not tasted rain for a hundred long years - of course he stood at bay, fearful that a single drop might shatter him entire. Of course he drank deep, regardless, and was swept away. Distant thunder licks from her throat as she stirs. He answers in kind, leaning in to breathe the sultry scent of her; heavy and heady and maddening, elusive as petrichor. The brush of his lips rouses her like the careless whistle of a sailor, and her eyes meet his at the challenge: a flicker of argent lightning on a dark horizon, pregnant with immanence. He bathes in the lambent fulgur of her gaze, his body pliant in willing paralysis as she rolls him on to his back: enfolding, immersing, her hair streaming about him like a curtain of fog. Her every movement is deliberate as the recitation of an ancient lay; she scarce knows the words, but the rhythm is writ into her - the slow roll of an ocean swell. There is no tact; no subtlety, no skill in her grasping hands and chasing mouth; only instinct, squalling hunger, and a desperate need to pull him closer, pull him under. Which is as well, for his only wish is to drown, with her and in her, again and again and again; a twined tempest, from which they might both emerge reborn.
