INT. LAMBY’S APARTMENT - NIGHT It’s 2003. A VHS tape of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” plays on the TV. A pet snake slithers in a tank next to free weights. South Asian JASMINE (33, curly haired) tries to watch the movie as Caucasian LAMBY (36, tall, muscular) has energetic sex on top of her. He’s into it. She’s not. Her flip phone rings. She grabs the phone out of Lamby’s view. He’s oblivious and keeps going. JASMINE (quietly into the phone) Ma? I told you this phone is for emergencies - no, I don’t want to meet Deepak. LAMBY Deeper? JASMINE (into the phone) I’m out of breath ‘cuz I’m taking the stairs. I love you. LAMBY (mumbles) Love you too. Jasmine hangs up. Lamby finishes and rolls over, spent. JASMINE I gotta go. Ma needs me. LAMBY That Y2K shit again? That was three years ago. JASMINE I told you, Lamby. Ma’s been on edge with a new restaurant opening across from ours. She needs me. LAMBY You two have a weird relationship. JASMINE No, we don’t. We’re just... close. LAMBY If you two are so close why haven’t you told her about me? JASMINE I don’t have fifteen years to explain the nuances of an Indian mother/daughter relationship to you. I have to go.

TEASER INT. LAB BUILDING #1 - NIGHT Calculations on a monitor. A waterfall of green numbers on a boxy, old-school computer. The feverish clatter of computer keys. Gas-station coffee cups litter the desktop between stacks of paperwork. A faded RED BACKPACK rests on an office chair. DANIEL TABOR (30s) hunches over the computer workstation at the far end of the Quonset. His white lab coat is soaked through with perspiration and clings to his thin frame. DANIEL Come on... The calculations commence with a BEEP and Daniel inserts a floppy disk into the computer. JESSICA speaks into Daniel's mind. She almost sounds human. JESSICA (V.O.) You're too late. You can't stop him. Daniel swats at his head. DANIEL Shut up! Daniel punches a key, and grainy security camera footage of the building's entrance fills the monitor. On the screen, a tall man walks through the entrance with the purposeful stride of a sleep-away camp slasher. DANIEL SHIT! Daniel's hand shakes as it waits by the floppy drive. Across the room, the security lock CLICKS. The disc ejects. Daniel shoves it in his pocket. The door HISSES open and LEONARD (40s) strides in. His sinewy arms are littered with bruises and shitty tattoos.

Self-assured JACK GILMOUR (mid-20s), race ticket in hand, ambles toward the fence by the track. His affably rugged brother RUSS (early 20s) buys an ice cream then joins him. RUSS (V.O.) Our pop once told us that horse racing is the only sport where the participants don't have a mind of their own. FENCE BY THE RACETRACK Jack deftly rolls a silver dollar across his knuckles. Russ smirks at a jockey awkwardly trying to mount a balking and uncooperative thoroughbred. RUSS (V.O.) When we got older, we figured out what he meant. Stumble! Hurl!

Here's an opening of the new thing I'm wrestling with. It's a vampire story about how the asylum process slowly sucks the life out of you. It's still very early days: I'm hoping it's a tale of for bloody revenge, but I fear it's about complicity. #scriptsky #FirstPageFriday.
INT. RUN-DOWN ROOM - DUSK Two single beds pushed together. On one side, a person-shaped lump under shabby covers holds back snuffly sobs. Drop down.... down past a small counter with a scaly kettle - past a minibar-sized gap - This was a hotel room once - ... to a mouse-eye view of stained carpet and a skirting board peeling away from a mould-stained wall. J.K. decor. Whiskers twitch at an open-ended plastic box hard up against the skirting board. Just inside, a smear of peanut butter. A paw moves. Another. A dizzying scurry and... CLATTER. The trap door drops. The mouse runs - frantic - hits clear plastic. No way out. LATER - NIGHT The mouse huddles in the trap, peanut butter untouched. The person-shaped shaped lump in bed hasn’t moved. Dragging steps (O.S.). The lump pulls down the covers to reveal AMARA’s (20s, seen too much) tousled head and reddened eyes. BEEP. A keycard opens the door. Amara stares at GRACE (20s, well-named) shivering in the doorway. AMARA I thought they detained you. I was - GRACE The bus broke down outside Liverpool. So did the heater. AMARA How’d it go? GRACE I don’t think she believed a word I said. Who’s Oscar Wilde? Amara shrugs. No clue. GRACE She thought I should know him. I don’t know anyone called Oscar.

EXT. THE SKY - NIGHT A pigeon swoops through the sky, almost majestic. You know. For a pigeon. In between the clouds then straight down. A British City, brimming with light and life. Overflowing with wires and screens. The pigeon flies down between the buildings, the bustle people disappearing as they reach the alleyways, there's something moving fast down there. The pigeon keeps pace, in sync with the fast moving object. A serene moment-WHRRH. The Pigeon is DESTROYED. Something smashed right through it. EXT. ALLEYS - NIGHT We're close to a man now, dressed head to toe in black, if we weren't this close, we wouldn't know they were there. He's on a bike, cycling furiously. A black cube nylon cube on the back. Weaving between obstacles. Jumping over platforms. Lights turn off as he gets close, like darkness follows him. He snaps his head back, looking up, something whizzes by. His bike catches a pipe and it sends him FLYING. He grabs the black cube mid-air, landing his back, sure to keep the black cube from getting damaged. He flicks his wrist open, a countdown timer. Rapidly approaching zero. He sprints, cube in tow. EXT. STREETS - NIGHT Keeping to the shadows, he dashes and dives. He's heading for a house. Flicks his wrist again. Timer is seconds away.

Just rewrote this opener for a workshop, and I feel like it does a better job of setting up the tone than the old page.

Bonus points for any South Dakotan who gets a little jump scare at the therapist last name 👀 Call it very niche foreshadowing.

Gray-haired yet youthful GRANDPARENTS help a pair of adorable CHILDREN (ages 5-12) skewer marshmallows on sticks as their attractive PARENTS watch on with delight. A stock photo on a homepage. A thumb with chipped blue nail polish nudges the happy family, shifting everything up to reveal white text: JANKLOW FAMILY THERAPY Compassionate reunification for divided families. INT. PHARMACY - DAY CAT BARNS (30, White) stares at her phone, a mix of emotions swim under her calm demeanor. Fear. Longing. Excitement. Cat wears scrubs, and a denim jacket decorated with colorful pins. She slouches in the corner of the single row of chairs. PHARMACIST (o.S.) Barns? Cat's focus breaks, and she pushes past the TALL MAN who watches her from the aisle. She approaches the counter with a familiar smile. CAT Thanks. I already called in the payment, do you need ID? PHARMACIST All good, Cat. Any questions? The pharmacist staples some paperwork to a white paper bag before handing it over. CAT Nothing I can't handle. See ya! A quick smile and Cat departs, unaware of the TALL MAN still watching her every move.

EXT. TRAILER - DUSK Could use a paint job and a new screen door, but money’s tight, judging by the old rust-bucket parked out front. A plastic toy windmill on a stick whirls in the breeze. More forlorn than festive. Clouds hang heavy with snow, but it’s not falling yet. The dirt drive disappears into the woods - last fall leaves clinging on hard. A rugged-up DOUG (early 50s, a bearded bear of a man) trudges up the drive. RAPS at the door. DOUG Hello? Anyone home? Silence. He listens hard. Hears movement inside. DOUG Hello? CLAUDIE (O.S.) You didn’t see my ‘Keep Out - Private Property’ notice? The door stays firmly shut. A no-nonsense voice - used to fending off salesmen and god-botherers though they’d be desperate to come this far out of town. DOUG I did Ma’am, but my truck broke down. CLAUDIE (O.S.) I look like a tow truck? Call roadside assistance. DOUG Phone battery died right before the truck did. It’s really not my day. CLAUDIE (late 40s, wiry, been too long in one place) opens up the main door - leaves the screen door closed. Takes a good long look at Doug, stamping in the cold, hands tucked in his armpits. Coat a little thin for the weather. Big, but he looks harmless. His grin’s disarming. DOUG Ma’am. You look nothing like a tow truck. Could you please call Triple A for me? Name’s Doug. He shows his driver’s license in the ID compartment of his wallet. Claudie spots cash in there too. She compares the license to Doug - it checks out. There’s a picture of a little girl in the spare ID compartment of the wallet. CLAUDIE That your daughter? DOUG Sure is. From a while ago though - she’s a senior now. Claudie sizes him up. Nods. CLAUDIE Guess you’d better come in - it’s you they’ll wanna talk with. She unlatches the screen door. CLAUDIE C’mon. You’re letting the hot air out. EXT. ROADSIDE PULL-OFF - DAWN No traffic. Snow falls thick and fast. A full logging-truck takes up the length of the pull-off, a couple of inches of snow atop the logs. Doug schlepps towards it, breath white in the air - humming a little tune. Tosses something over his shoulder... a suet ball. Bird feed. INT. WHITE 4X4 - DAWN Condensation clears from the windscreen. Doug checks himself over in the central mirror. Pulls out an alcohol wipe and dabs it on a tiny scratch on his cheek. Inspects it - near invisible.

Other false start. Draft 1, realized as it was quickly becoming a sex comedy, having a 10 year old protagonist would NOT work. Draft 2 from the mom's POV, but felt like I was telling 2 stories. Figuring out who I want to centre in draft 3 is another 2026 problem. #scriptsky #firstpagefriday x2
