The government shutdown compounds the problem by delaying even the release of that outdated data, leaving the FOMC flying blind. Fed Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged during previous shutdowns that missing real-time information 'made it more difficult to predict' economic impacts. (4/5)

By the time the Federal Reserve votes on October 28-29, September CPI data will be six weeks stale.
