The view across a ploughed field towards the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel British Cemetery and the Sunken Lane. A mine was exploded on 1st July 1916 from near where the picture was taken, signalling the opening of the Allied attacks on German positions in the Battle of the Somme. The British Army suffered almost 60,000 casualties that day, the bloodiest day in its history.

Norfolk Cemetery, a Commonwealth War Graves Commissions site, Becoedel-Becourt in the Somme region of northern France. The cemetery was begun by the 1st Norfolks in August 1915 and used by other units (including the 8th Norfolks) until August 1916. After the Armistice it was almost doubled in size when graves were brought in from the nearby battlefields.

On 9 April 1917, the opening day of the Battle of Arras, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps, fighting together for the first time, scored an important tactical victory in capturing the 60 metre high Vimy Ridge. The memorial was designed by W.S. Allward and unveiled by King Edward VIII on 26 July 1936.

It didn’t though, did it? The ‘stalemate of trench warfare’ had already been ‘shattered’ by the German offensives of 1918 and by the French-led* counter-offensive in July 1918 now known as the second phase of the Second Battle of the Marne.

When a #1GM account mentions a rail station, I try to find the station to see how it looks now. Sad to see those that are closed that were known to « les poilus ».

This is l’ancienne gare de Moux (11). On Jan 11, 1916, CPL Louis Barthas of 296e RI, arrived here on his first home leave since 1914.
A photograph of the former Station at Moux in the Aude department. The photo shows a rather shabby set of white walled and red windowed buildings of which the main one has two floors with three smaller windows on the upper floor and three large windows (likely one of which is a door but they all look the same). The buildings have red tile roofs. There are electrical wires above the rail lines of which it seems three sets run in front of the Station buildings. There is one metal and one concrete support for the overhead wires visible in the photo. it’s rather sad scene with grass and other vegetation growing between the rails. The photograph is from http://passes-montagnes.fr/htlm1/vf_caunes-moux-6.html - a website which traces the former railway line that ran through this part of the Aude. I hope they will be okay that I used it.

Today marks the 107th anniversary of the Battle of Cambrai. This is Deborah, a Mark IV tank recovered from the battlefield in 1998 and now housed in a museum in the French village of Flesquières. #FWWHistory #WW1 #Cambrai #France #photography #tank
Deborah, a Mark IV female tank armed with machine guns which took part in the Allied offensive at Cambrai on November 20th 1917. Known primarily as the first massed tank attack of the Great War, the battle was also notable for the combination of artillery and infantry which saw initial success before the German counterattacks later in the month.
