Shared recently by #FIDMMuseum this is about how I feel right now. We rarely get much snow in the South West of England but it is icy outside. With my new hip installed I find I am extra cautious which is why I am looking out at it from the comfort of home! #1910s ensemble #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Designer Jeanne Lanvin was born on this day in 1867, one of the earliest women pioneers to excel in the business of fashion, joining the Syndicat de la Couture in 1909. This is a rich, jewel like gown, a turquoise gem with a gold trim, early #1930s #fondationazzedinealaia #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Swinging into 2026 with a chic but sporty set, a favourite ensemble in lemon knitted silk. It is a late #1920s design attributed to Jean Patou, one of the first labels to successfully market the logos as a piece of brand aspiration @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

A joyful burst of a ballgown, ruched in rosy silk & the perfect party dress if New Year’s Eve is your thing. It isn’t mine, I am wrapped up in a cosy knit on the sofa but I would like to say a big thank you for your connections this year. Charles James dress, 1953 #museumatFIT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Born on this day in 1905, Anna-May Wong was a trailblazing Chinese American actress in the early years of Hollywood when cultural diversity was not very common. She wore this 1934 gown by Travis Banton in the film Limehouse Blues @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Frost had muted the colours of the landscape this morning on #Dartmoor, cloaking everything in a pale and wintry light. It reminded me of the Regency fondness for a bright underdress softened with a white lace layer. Princess Charlotte dress c1805 #FashionMuseumBath #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

An icicle in dress form, it is a glittering column of sequin covered tulle in opal iridescence and silver leaves. It consists of three layers of tulle which form a foamy hem. Evening dress, #1930s @chertseymuseum.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

It is just possible to make out from the light glancing off the surface of the fabric that this is a short cape of deep green silk velvet rather than black. It includes a chin tickling rosette of cream silk chiffon and some vertical lace strips, #1890s #newcanaanmuseum #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Not being a designer/maker myself, I stand in awe of the innovative constructions such as this. Lanvin’s mid #1930s evening dress takes burnt orange silk crepe with some sparkles and contrives a complex bodice that just drapes beautifully #LACMA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

I do love the details that are stitched into the construction of early #1820s outerwear. Whether it is the long pelisse or the short fitted spencer, the hand worked shoulder puffs and appliqués decorating the bodices are beautifully subtle #cincyartmuseum #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

This is an ensemble that has fun woven into its very fibres. It is polka dots and puff ball skirts and scarlet wraps and black bows and calls for music and dancing and laughing. Or you can just enjoy it from your sofa, like me. Arnold Scaasi, 1961 @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

It positively glows, this early 1890s tea gown by Emile Pingat. The variegated black & yellow silk creates a kind of burnished hue, additional drama fashioned in full sleeves & high collar. It seems quite structured for a tea gown but it certainly makes a statement #NatGalleryAus #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

So apparently "amaranth" is the classy old word for "hot pink" if you want to discuss historical costumery?

Trans flag colors in history...

Poking through old fashion plates I ran across this December 1872 one from the English magazine "Le Monde Élégant" with some ladies in ball gowns including one in a perfect set of trans flag colors. 💙 💕 🤍💕 💙

Joy to all trans sisters out there!

This is a real plum pudding of a dress. It demonstrates beautifully how the mid #1880s dolman style cape/coat/cloak sat neatly above the very obvious bustle of the period, cut shorter at the back with longer lines at the front #TSarrou #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
