And we can be fairly certain that Palaeolithic people were not in fact preferring Holborn, Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia, Marylebone and Mayfair over Bayswater, Knightsbridge and Paddington. So what has given rise to this mapped distribution pattern? Recent historical geography I assume.🏺🦣

"Table for one. And I want the gingerbread starters…"
"Please sir, can I have some more linseed oil?"

#Halloween is starting to get creepy already, seen on a very snaking @metwalkers.bsky.social saunter through #Fitzrovia where we were led past 50 bars, but only entered one.

Denton Welch’s journal of the war years is beautiful on Kent and his distance from the military masculinity of his generation (Welch had serious health issues from a cycling accident) & has poignant description of queer cruising. There’s an exhibition on of his paintings on in Fitzrovia this month…

Happy 60th Birthday to the BT Tower!

Built 1961-65 to the designs of Eric Bedford, Chief Architect at the Ministry of Public Works, the 582ft telecommunications tower is one of Britain's most distinctive post-war buildings and after being sold in 2024, is set to be converted to a destination hotel.

The lovely dinginess of Fitzrovia before everything became bright blue glass and steel. I used to work in Clipstone Street, then latterly next to Euston Tower.

That'd be a few streets north these days, I reckon.
My favourite dingy Fitzrovia story was a pub landlord who had - ahem - relations with his partner on a mattress on the stairs. When asked why, he explained he could keep an eye on the bar.

The Post Office tower – now known as the BT Tower – opened in the Fitzrovia area of central London on this day in 1965. The tower's main structure was 581ft (177m) high. A further section of aerial rigging brought the total height to 627ft (191m).

Okay, lovely folk. I'm heading to London tomorrow for the first time, and needing recommendations for good, affordable eateries around the Fitzrovia, Soho or Covent Garden area.
