The United States throws away a lot of food. In fact, nearly 40% of the food we produce ends up in the landfill. Landfill environments prevent food from decomposing properly, causing food to rot and release methane. 

The idea that emissions can be offset through projects that claim to avoid releases or to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is fatally flawed.
