I visited today the local museum (as one does), and I used the opportunity to find some critters.

He did the same thing when he acquired the Bonwit Teller building and wrecked the deco frieze he promised the Met Museum. He then built the hideous tower on Fifth where he had great success as a Russian laundromat.

This on top of what he did to the Rose Garden, both without consulting anyone, should be added to the case for his impeachment. If there were aesthetic police, he would have been locked up when he razed the old Saks Fifth Avenue, promised the frieze to the Met museum, smashed it, built ugly tower.

1/3 Former Egyptian Lacquer Manufacturing Co Building. This terra cotta was modeled by the great Fritz Albert of Northwestern Terra Cotta Co, who beyond just being exceptionally good at what he did, also happened to be an Egyptologist in his spare time.

Color close-up on an incredibly detailed Egyptian Revival door surround flanked by two large, round and empty planters. Entry to the building is through wooden double doors with glass panels covered by security bars. There is a large transom with the address above. The surround is of polychrome terra cotta, with a frieze of cobras topped by sun disks above, and 12 detailed panels of Egyptian style art to the left and right, terminating with 2 panels featuring long and skinny lotus flowers at bottom. A molding I think it meant to suggest twisted rope surrounds the whole. The three panels to the bottom right have been severely damaged. Color detail of the polychrome terra cotta that ornaments the raised parapet. This one is a doozy -- a winged roundel featuring a stylized pharaoh, along with some horizontal hieroglyphs. The cracked and damaged roundel is flanked by two upright and menacing uraei cobras wearing crowns and facing opposite directions. The layered wings are rendered in three different colors and two different patterns and themselves sit on another bed of polychrome terra cotta that makes up the cornice. Color photo taken at angle, showing part of the frieze of stylized upright polychrome terra cotta uraei cobra figures balancing sun disks on their heads. Their little faces are highly detailed, and you know they mean business. Color close-up looking up at the polychrome terra cotta concave cavetto cornice, an arrangement of stylized lotus leaves in cream, green and blue. Larger leaves are in front, with slightly taller smaller leaves peeking out from in between.

#ReliefWednesday - One of the frieze reliefs with gladiatorial scenes from the necropolis of Kibyra, Pisidia. It is carved in local limestone or marble and dates to the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD.

Burdur Archaeological Museum, Türkiye.
Two pairs of gladiators are engaged in close combat. The fighters on the left are bareheaded, grappling with helmeted opponents. The chair or platform beneath the seated figure is unusual, possibly a wooden structure or barrier representing the referee’s stand. Below this group lies a fallen gladiator. To his right stands a victorious gladiator raising one arm in triumph.

Lee Krasner (1908–84) was pivotal in “American Abstract Expressionism”, making profound contributions via her innovative art, advocacy, and role in shaping the movement, famously promoting her husband Jackson Pollock’s work. She was influenced by Cubism, Surrealism, and Hans Hofmann’s teachings.

The strategy of employing the grid was commonplace among non-representational artists of the 1970s. The grid allows the artist to make a work where there is not a contrast of large versus small, but where all visual information is equally weighed.
