Screw it, posting my rants on Harry Potter's insipid writing and how much it pisses me off on several levels 🧵
It was all the rage when I grew up and in retrospect, it just seemed like it was furiously marketed. The moment you look a bit deeper into it, you realize that it's just a world where bullying and hatefulness is normalized and encouraged The second book shows there's a ghost of a little girl who was bullied, then killed by a snake in a bathroom. Nobody gives a shit about her, even years later But it's okay, she harasses Harry in the bath, because I guess harassment in the bathroom is okay to Rowling when a girl's doing it to a boy But a trans person using a bathroom? No no no, she can't have that! The woman also really seems to hate overly feminine girls. Like, Ginny is hyped up because she's not like other girls, Ubridge is cartoonishly feminine and is treated like a bitch worthy of being assaulted by centaurs, Skeeter is a trans-coded "manish woman" as Rowling depicts her, and she's a cruel journalist who invades privacy and is worthy of being trapped and blackmailed. Fleur, a feminine head-turning beauty, is loathed by the Weasley women because... men find her attractive? Like, I ranted before that SMG4 gives me "anti-feminine" vibes, but holy crap, you're gonna have your "quirky family" just slutshame a girl? Oh, and Lavender Brown, a girl who has a crush on Ron and is overly smothery. She's treated like a nuisance for this Because clearly, Ron should instead go out with Hermione, a girl he has been having arguments with for 5-6 years by this point That's true love right there Oh, and Lavender? Wanna know what happens to her? She gets mauled in the final battle by a werewolf (The werewolf in question is a coded gay pedophile allegory)
