Not sure what I was thinking when I said I’d talk to the minister about Joey’s funeral. Herm was the churchy one, not me. At least it wasn’t a dark, Gothic building, with grey stone and stained glass blocking all view of the outside world, where you felt like you’d already been buried alive. Instead, being in the sanctuary of First Church of the Kindred was like being inside a marshmallow. I imagined a watchful crew of Holy Painters running around, armed with brushes and paint rollers like Crusaders’ swords to maintain the clean, white surfaces.

As a kid, I’d never liked being in church. If tourists weren’t handy, churches made it easy for us to part folks from their money. I briefly worried about this when I was around six, expecting a lightning bolt to strike me. It never did. Now I was in a church after beheading a vampire. I didn’t know if I should expect a lightning bolt or an angel chorus.

“Exsanguination,” I whispered. “The killer wore a long purple dress, a purple, green, and gold wig, and a purple and gold feathered mask. And was tall.”

She gazed at me, concerned. “Maybelle Spurlock’s tall.” Gus’s friend had been murdered. I couldn’t help thinking that dating a man whose ‘late’ wife was likely Undead meant it was only a matter of time before she tried to come after me.

“I assumed. Poor boy! He deserves a reprieve.”

“You know Mr. and Mrs. O’Neill, of course?” He turned to them.

“Of course!” Mrs. O’Neill said a little too loudly, her plate of refreshments shaking alarmingly, though nothing fell. She gripped a cane with her other hand. “Bernie loved working for Phyllis, didn’t she?” she said to her husband, who tipped back a champagne flute. Its diameter was considerably smaller than his mouth so it was a struggle. Some dribbled down his chin but he lacked a free hand to wipe it, grasping a walker with his other hand. I restrained myself from using my hankie to clean his chin.

Robin stared at us. “You’re joking.”

“It’s not exactly something you mention if you don’t want to be fitted for a straitjacket. But vampires, ghosts, and zombies are only ‘made up’ if you don’t know that vampires aren’t.”

She sat on a stool, pressing a cloth to her neck. “So—why isn’t he Joey Four-Fingered-Pile-of-Dust?”

I sighed. “Because this is real life and we don’t have special effects people to conveniently turn vampires to dust for us,” I explained to the one person in the room who’d been to medical school.
