I was a "GWB was worse" guy until Trump started feeding people into the covid wood chipper.
Curious what Mr. Doofus's beef with Truman is. Nuking Japan? Desegregating the military? It's a big world out there.

It's just so fucking rude. As evil as GWB was, he was at least cordial with reporters. 4547 is just straight up an asshole.

Yes, people may not have experienced/don’t remember how GWB went from becoming president while losing the popular election, gained wartime-president levels of popularity, and then was abandoned wholesale by his own party/voters. It can happen

The determination of the GOP to step on rakes with Hispanics is fascinating. GWB and Rove were absolutely right that the future of the GOP was to ally with Hispanics over shared cultural conservatism and hierarchal traditions. I remember being really afraid it would work.

No, I still don’t think that’s even arguable.

Andrew Johnson and James Buchanan were far worse, and arguably so was Truman and GWB, etc. We have a long history of horrible presidents.

GWB was at least partially re-elected based on backlash to 1 state making marriage equality legal earlier that year. No other state would do it until 2007.

8 years later, it was legal nationwide. The pace of it was unthinkable for anyone to see coming.

The Texas GOP hit its electoral peak under GWB, but the Dems have been clawing their way back ever since. Just check the margins over time in the statewide races. Averages out to about 0.5% swing each year.

It's 2004. We're ~3 months into my freshman year of college. GWB has just won reelection, in no small part due to fearmongering over gay marriage. I find a gay classmate sobbing in the stairwell about "why do people hate me so much?"

It's 2015. 11 years later. Gay marriage is legal nationwide.

LOL except that it's not GWB Bubba they were referring to 😆

Short dive into Wikipedia shows his dad was a big GWB supporter in 2000, but also donated to Mondale, so...

he could never dodge a shoe like GWB did and I do not like giving W credit for anything

If you're talking about Bush Jr you should abbreviate it as GWB. GW= George Washington.

Here's a reminder if you need one that all of the 9/11 assassins were Saudis, including Osama Bin Laden. The GWB administration gave the Royal family in America safe passage home when all other air travel was grounded.

I would say it slightly differently. Voters want someone who unflinchingly stands for his/her beliefs, even if some of those beliefs are unpopular.

GWB was the second worst president of my lifetime, and I never voted for him, but I respected that he stood for his beliefs when they were unpopular.
to be clear, i also do not think it is necessarily true that adopting a laundry list of progressive positions is an instant win either. i think you have to do the work of discovering what it is that voters want in a direct and engaged way. and i think that voters want moral leadership.
it is almost as if accommodating and conceding to far right ideas legitimizes them and signals to voters that the far right is a legitimate choice for governance

True. Clinton benefited from being between the Bushes. Cool but disappointing. Given his worldview and the people surrounding him, GWB had a form of empathy, and he embraced his oracular deficiency.

Those guys were cool because they had the ability to evolve and admit mistakes, and had the ability to empathize*. Hell even GWB genuinely mourned with disaster survivors.

*Clinton is obviously a massive disappointment. “Product of his time” doesn’t really gloss over his faults.

I thought we couldn't get worse than GWB when he was president. I was so wrong.

well, they managed to let a guy throw not one, but *both* shoes at GWB...

Remember when American presidents used to be called by their initials? FDR, JFK, LBJ ... doesn't really happen now. We never hear of GHB, GWB, BHO, JRB or DJT.
November 18, 2025 at 7:25 AM
Running the counterfactual of that election is just heartbreaking.

What we could have been without the GWB administration.

And the financial scandal was wrapped up in Clinton — I was so glad we had Obama as an option. As much as I wanted to prove two presidential-quality people could fall in love and marry, power just attracts too much corruption so they couldn’t both safely have it sequentially. GWB was a huge error.

I voted for Gore because he was better than GWB and GWB proved me right.
November 18, 2025 at 6:23 AM
Longer than that. The press crooned about Reagan being the “Teflon POTUS” - while applying it.

They also behaved abominably during the 2000 campaign, preferring to hang with the “fun” GWB (who had an offensive and belittling nickname for everyone) rather than the oh-so-dull Al Gore.
