And in fact the entire thrust of this four-hour doc is an examination of the ultimate failure of glasnost, perestroika and the end of the Cold War leading to *gestures at state of world* this crap. Very poignant in its final tragic conclusion that we have utterly wasted the Space Race

The latter is now its primary significance for Ukrainians, but in trying to ban a culture Russia only ensured its survival.
The Sixtiers were of course crushed by a new wave of repressions that largely persisted until Glasnost and Perestroika. (57/61)

‘The deepest sort of spiritual disorientation’ Historian Joseph Kellner on the zeitgeist of the Soviet collapse and its lessons for today’s democracies — Meduza

...s one of the original 20 Soviet cosmonauts, who was dismissed from the Soviet space program in 1963 for drunk and disorderly conduct. His existence in the program was kept secret until the advent of Soviet glasnost in the late 1980s. He committed suicide on February 18, 1966.

Glasnost and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

This is false and proven as such during glasnost. Sorry if your family history is a lie. Your parent/grandparent was probably part of the problem, and I support their removal from the USSR.

Tensions were easing in the 80s. During perestroika and glasnost, Mikhail Gorbachev asked America and rest of the West for economic aids like loans.

They told him to pound sand and left Russia to the wolves.

Ah. Definitely recent history, I see. And about that honeymoon thing, he went there shortly (not immediately) after his wedding, during the Glasnost and Perestroika period, regarding commerce on behalf of Burlington. He was it's mayor then.

Trump and Ivana visited, also on business, a year earlier.
Bullshit. Bernie's longtime hero was a brutal Communist dictator named Fidel Castro. No thanks Comrade.

... overwhelming the already strained Soviet economy, & undermining the credibility of the Communist Party's claims of superiority and openness (glasnost). Mikhail Gorbachev himself believed it was a crucial factor, revealing the system's inherent weaknesses & making the need for reform undeniable.

Honestly I'm not so sure what with the way Russia has gone.
USSR - > Russia is a different matter to independence for the the subject nations, glasnost and perestroika.
These were good.
But the quick fire sale of state assets, legal dissolution, and founding of the oligarch class...

I respected Russia for a while after Glasnost, even made the mistake of feeling that they shared similar values to civilised people, but that all got pissed up the wall when Putin and the kleptocracy took over.

I'm reminded of this video I like put up on YouTube 18 years ago.

The anti-glasnost hardliners imprisoned Gorbachev in 1991 and shut down all the TV stations, radio stations, newspapers and magazines. But they didn't know about the then new Internet. Featuring one of my late wife's friends, Vadim:
How the internet saved Russia from the hardliners
