The "S" is a frequently retconned part of Superman lore. While its often said to be from Krypton, one story connects it to Jonathan Kent and indigenous America. Would be cool if the logo in Superman 2 was more S-like, tying in this story and emphasizing Clark embracing the Kents as his true parents.

Included with the letters and other items is a royal blue blanket with a crude "S" emblem on a shield. The blanket belonged to Kent ancestor Mary Glenowen, who was part Native American. She explains to her future husband Nathaniel Kent that each of the five sides of the diamond shield represents the five Iroquois Indian tribes that remained, and the "S" was a snake, considered to be a symbol of healing."
