X-ray and optical image data from the Chandra and Hubble space telescopes reveal the Cheshire Cat galaxy group, a whimsical sight of two merging elliptical galaxies in Ursa Major, 4.6 billion light-years away. Gravitational lensing, predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity, creates arcs of light from background galaxies, while the collision of the foreground galaxies heats gas to millions of degrees, producing the purple X-ray glow.
