Extreme weather is making flooding more common across NYC every year On Monday evening New York City got flash floods with 2 inches of water an hour Extreme weather is becoming routine. Hurricanes like Ida keep breaking rainfall records (3.15 inches/hour) — flooding our subways, downing trees and taking out power lines. But leaders like Governor Hochul want to keep burning fossil fuels, keeping New Yorkers in harm's way. But we don't have to settle for disaster. We're demanding clean, publicly-owned power for all of New York that lowers our bills AND fights the climate crisis.

One of Mamdani’s signature legislative priorities — although he wasn’t the prime sponsor of the bill — was pushing for the New York Power Authority to build out new renewable generation. He’s one of only two lawmakers who actively participated in Con Edison’s last rate case and recently slammed the utility for seeking another bill hike. Mamdani also opposed a new gas plant in his district that was blocked by Gov. Kathy Hochul and sponsored an unsuccessful measure to ban new fossil fuel power plants. “At a time when we’re certainly seeing Republicans, but even some Democrats, backing away from climate change and a kind of Green New Deal style politics, this is a huge rebuke to that,” said Daniel Goulden, the strategy co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America’s Ecosocialist Working Group. “Our horizons have expanded exponentially — and I’m really excited for the future for the first time, maybe, in my entire life,” they said. Mamdani’s most detailed clean energy proposal on the campaign trail was to renovate and decarbonize 500 schools, transform 500 schoolyards into green spaces, and create 50 resilience hubs at schools. Mamdani supports the [Public Power NY] effort to get the power authority to move faster and build 15 gigawatts of renewables, including a third of that in the downstate region. The authority currently has plans to build 6 gigawatts, although many of those projects are in the early stages of vetting. As mayor of New York City, Mamdani would have a significant platform to pressure the power authority and Gov. Kathy Hochul to do more to decarbonize the downstate grid. The region’s electricity mix is currently 89 percent fossil fuels. He could also promote additional solar and storage on city properties if he ascends to City Hall, although there is already a local law setting targets for solar on city facilities.

New York Focus headline: In Brief: New York's Plan to Build Public Renewable Energy Colin Kinniburgh March 25, 2025 New York has ambitious climate goals — and is significantly behind on meeting them. That’s in part because the state isn’t building renewable energy fast enough. But New York has a unique tool in its clean energy toolbox: the New York Power Authority, or NYPA, a public institution that supplies a significant portion of the state’s power thanks to two major hydroelectric dams and a network of transmission lines that spans the entire state. Two years ago, New York gave NYPA the power to help the state speed up its energy transition. ... At its core, the legislation — which NYPA refers to as its “expanded authority” — allows NYPA to build new renewable energy and battery storage projects, something it was not previously allowed to do. It can partner with private developers to do so, as long as it maintains majority ownership (at least a 51 percent stake) in any project. All of its new clean energy projects must be built with union labor. The Public Power New York coalition, which led the charge for the Build Public Renewables Act, pushed hard last year for NYPA to build vastly more renewables — 15 gigawatts’ worth, which is what the group says is needed to meet climate law targets. The group rallied supporters to pack hearings and submit thousands of online comments, and won support from groups including the New York AFL-CIO labor federation and the Building Trades Council. It slammed NYPA’s final plan as one that “will turn us into the state that failed our own climate goals by a mile.”
