35. No Straight Roads: Encore Edition (2020, PC / Consoles).

It's funny this shares a list with Hi-Fi Rush, a game with very similar themes, but has garnered greater press. More have likely played HFR than NSR, and I wouldn't blame them. It's arguably more polished.

And yet, I find NSR charming.
There's no denying NSR, even the Encore Edition I played, is janky as hell. HFR is certainly the better combat game, at least by comparison. Combat in NSR is, at best, optional. There are skill trees devoted to it, for some reason, yet you can beat the game without touching it once. Despite this, I found myself endlessly charmed, finding its world and music far more compelling than HFR's, by leagues. Part of that, I think, comes down to its presentation. HFR is aiming for "anime you would have seen in the 00s," but NSR is a Saturday Morning Cartoon from an alternate Earth, one where Malaysia was on par with Japan and America in children's programming. Playing NSR also feels like playing a forgotten PS2 game, the sort that would be rediscovered today as a cult classic. The game is a mess, there's no denying. It's an action-platformer where the action is more a guideline than a hard rule. There's a skill tree with an *oddly* expensive surcharge, so you're better off *broke.* Enemy variety... does not exist in this game's vocabulary. The rhythm elements range from great to passable to *why?* But where it shines, it shines with such brilliance I'm almost willing to overlook its flaws. The main characters are a delightful duo, and the voice cast consists of bilingual Malaysian performers who bring their natural cadence to the characters that give them such *life.* For all the game is a love letter to rock 'n' roll and EDM and PS2-era platformers, it's as much an ode to Malaysia and Malaysia pop culture, right down to its use of casual Malay slang peppered into the dialogue. It all feels that much more lively and distinctive. And where the game wins my love? The boss battles, the set pieces: each boss fight is, itself, a short story told through music and strong visuals, strung together by beat 'em up mechanics and rhythm sections, coalesced into fantastic gags and metaphors about the music industry, art, trends, celebrity and burnout. Each boss fight represents something our plucky indie rock heroes fear becoming. It's, in effect, good video game storytelling! ... I do wish, mind, that it was in a mechanically stronger game, but there is a sequel on the way. It's a little more refined, more focused, I'm buying that shit day one.

Great plot. Hard sci-fi. Unfortunately, Clarke writes like a retired scientist grandpa writing a story for his grandkids. Poor character development, worse dialogue. But he sticks the landing with a nicely written ending that saves it.

Sci-fi can often be deeply philosophical and political because the settings allow us to explore real world issues in an augmented reality that runs close to our own. It lets us project forward and sideways, so we might ask ourselves questions that are otherwise hard to pitch

2025 was a very awful year for me, so many hard times, challenges, and lots of personal issues. It was almost hard to be positive at all.
But, the art I was doing and your support has definitely kept me going, and I thank all of you for that.

An art summary of this year. Here's everything references in it: January: The Seal's First Run - An animation of Iris from Mega Man X becoming a Drone White. February: Hypnotic Couple, with Ameer hypnotizing Holly Wilderose March: Spy Slave Schala April: Reclusa Rosalina - Go play M&L Brothership May: Evangeline Ravenscroft - an old OC I rebooted this year June: Project Pandora - even though the art was from last year, this was for my college graduation project, which was a video game made in Godot. I got an A+ in it and I'm still proud of it, even if it's extremely rough July: Gem-Bot Lapis Lazuli from Steven Universe - definitely my favorite Ko-Fi reward that I've done for the year as I've put all of my drawing skills to the test there. Seriously, I still love it. August: Ashour-Drone Shantae - After playing Shantae Advance, I was obsessed with Shantae for a while lol September: Solfrid Evergreen - An OC I made that month and one that I want to use more often. October: Ashour-Drone Lilith - I've finally done a Darkstalkers pic this year! Wooooo!!! November: Egg-Drone Trip from Sonic Superstars - I was in a Superstars mood when I made that, so I went ahead and did it since I think Trip deserved more recognition December: Suzumi Kuzu Arde - A Christmas gift I did for a friend who loves the Len'en Project. There were many great pics this year, and sadly I couldn't fit them all in here heh

We moved away from "instant travel" mechanics. Instead, using a wormhole requires massive energy and risks tearing your ship apart via tidal forces.
