Learned about the word "heterotopia" today. It's funny. On paper it sounds like a term for a anti-LGBTQ society but it actually refers to spaces that are both similar & contrast their surroundings.

The classroom always felt like a different place from the rest of the world, at least a heterotopia if not a utopia ,where different values, norms, and a different temporality breaks from the rest of daily life...

I notice that it has been shorn of its famous subtitle, "an ambiguous utopia," famous enough that Samuel R. Delany was able to play off it by subtitling his novel Triton (later Trouble on Triton) "an ambiguous heterotopia." Now it is only subtitled "a novel."

I’m with you there. I think if you look at the parts that Miyazaki felt most drawn to (the human characters, the Europa world, the mythological magic, the use of heterotopia) there’s a really incredible basis that the movie couldn’t have existed without.

Honestly I read all the old stuff so I *don’t* eventually riff on it!
Though I do feel like Delany in general is one of the only ones that holds up conceptually.. SFF itself being an ambiguous heterotopia of time, of deviation, and also a crisis heterotopia for us misfits
