Today I heard about a lovely quote from a Chinese historian of mathematics whose name has not yet stuck in my brain. The quote was something like...

"Studying the history of mathematics does not make better mathematicians, but it makes gentler, more thoughtful ones."

Today I learnt:

The symbol for infinity has a name, it is a "Lemniscate" to mean "ribbon".

One version takes its definition from the locci of points with a constant product of distances from two fixed foci.
