Anthony Boyd asked Supreme Court justices to spare him from a torturous death by nitrogen hypoxia. They said no. His execution took 37 minutes. This is barbarous.

Our most recent work entitled “Hypoxia induces histone clipping and H3K4me3 loss in neutrophil progenitors resulting in long-term impairment of neutrophil immunity” is now published. Well done @mas-g.bsky.social. rdcu.be/eM5MT
Hypoxia induces histone clipping and H3K4me3 loss in neutrophil progenitors resulting in long-term impairment of neutrophil immunity
Nature Immunology - Walmsley and colleagues report that systemic hypoxia induces persistent loss of histone H3K4me3 marks and epigenetic reprogramming in neutrophil progenitors, resulting in...

I didn’t read this dissent at the time, but beyond my opposition to the death penalty under any circumstance, full stop, I did not stutter, allowing the state to execute someone by a method, nitrogen hypoxia, that an onlooker described as “drowning but without water” is abhorrent.
Oh my God

Alabama’s experiment of execution by nitrogen hypoxia has utterly failed, Elizabeth Bruenig argues. She reports on yesterday’s brutal execution of Anthony Boyd and its implications:

More from former #ListerFellow James Nathan and collaborators on mechanisms behind the long-term effects of hypoxia on neutrophil reprogramming. Study shows role of histone 3 clipping and persistent loss of the activating histone mark H3K4me3 in progenitor cells.

Like this is just huffing, right? The primary mechanism by which huffing produces its effects is hypoxia, and this is just another way of creating hypoxia

The Supreme Court’s liberal justices laid out a critique of nitrogen hypoxia executions, asserting the form of capital punishment causes “psychological terror” and “excruciating suffocation” in the condemned and likely violates the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

In defense of the hypoxia-pilled individuals, holding my breath while humping my diaper (read: five pairs of tighty whities) was potentially gave me the most mind blowing orgasm ever. It's a pity I passed out before it happened though.

Sotomayor says: "Allowing the nitrogen hypoxia experiment to continue...fails to ‘protec[t] [the] dignity’ of ‘the Nation we have

It can't be that the 8th Amendment permits death by nitrogen hypoxia, esp. with other methods of capital punishment available.
Don't just take our word for it — read Justice Sotomayor's dissent from yesterday (& in the end, it took Anthony Boyd 20 min. to die) www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p....

This is horrific. Nitrogen hypoxia is too "cruel and unusual" and is not "acceptable in a civilized society." I oppose the death penalty in ALL cases, but this is especially egregious. Alabama, do better!

We examined the effects of exposing successive generations to a stress we knew would induce epigenetic inheritance. Hypoxia exposure causes extended lifespan, reduced fertility, and reduced lipids and some of these phenotypes are heritable pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36516753/ 3/9
Hypoxia induces transgenerational epigenetic inheritance of small RNAs - PubMed
Animals sense and adapt to decreased oxygen availability, but whether and how hypoxia exposure in ancestors can elicit phenotypic consequences in normoxia-reared descendants are unclear. We show that hypoxia educes an intergenerational reduction in lipids and a transgenerational reduction in fertili …
