Notes on the updated Global Privacy Law and DPA Directory and major privacy developments - IAPP
The IAPP Research and Insights team updated its Global Privacy Law and DPA Directory. This latest version includes both new, amended, and draft comprehensive data privacy laws and reflects recent developments, including the establishment of new data protection authorities. First launched in 2017, the directory is intended to be a one-stop-shop for current information on data protection to keep privacy professionals up-to-date with global laws, authorities and trends. Data protection regimes continue to blossom and mature around the world. The European Commission has proposed significant reforms to its General Data Protection Regulation nearly 10 years after passage. In the last 12 months, India introduced new implementing rules to bring the Digital Personal Data Protection Act into force, Bangladesh and the Gambia adopted or are considering new comprehensive laws, and other countries, including Ecuador and Indonesia, introduced new agencies to interpret and enforce existing privacy statutes. Global data protection statistics According to the updated directory, 179 of the 240 analyzed jurisdictions have data protection frameworks in place while another eight are considering draft laws. This means approximately 3 out of every 4 countries are covered by data protection laws. Based on this count, over 6.6 billion people around the world are...

I'm disgusted to learn that this app and program was directly enabled by a fellow IAPP member and credentialed privacy professional. Helping this happen is a complete perversion of privacy.
NEW: Records reviewed by WIRED show DHS’s facial recognition app (Mobile Fortify) isn’t designed to actually "verify" identity—despite DHS claims and its agents relying on its matches to support probable cause in the field.
ICE and CBP’s Face-Recognition App Can’t Actually Verify Who People Are
ICE has used Mobile Fortify to identify immigrants and citizens alike over 100,000 times, by one estimate. It wasn't built to work like that—and only got approved after DHS abandoned its own privacy r...

Taiwan's strategic leap into AI: Enacting the AI Basic Act to foster innovation, governance - IAPP
Taiwan has long been recognized as a pivotal player in the global technology landscape, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing and chip production. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries worldwide, Taiwan is positioning itself to become a leader in AI development, especially by creating its own Traditional Chinese large language model. To this end, after nearly two years of extensive discussion, consultation and debate, Taiwan enacted the AI Basic Act, which went into effect 14 Jan. This landmark legislation establishes the government's foundational stance on AI and serves as a guiding framework for future policies, regulations and legal interpretations. Defining AI and the institutional framework The act adopts a definition of AI that closely aligns with the EU AI Act, emphasizing AI systems as technologies that provide humans with predictions, content, recommendations or decisions. This alignment signals Taiwan's intent to harmonize its regulatory approach with international standards, facilitating cross-border cooperation and market integration. The law designates the National Science and Technology Council as the primary regulator overseeing its implementation. However, many critical operational responsibilities are delegated to the Ministry of Digital Affairs, which will play a central role in managing AI governance, risk assessment and policy promotion. Seven fundamental principles guiding...

Vietnam's first standalone AI Law: An overview of key provisions, future implications - IAPP
Vietnam is accelerating its push to emerge as a regional technology powerhouse, with strategic investments in artificial intelligence and semiconductors underscoring this ambition. Government officials highlighted the technologies as twin engines for innovation and global competitiveness, aiming to nurture talent and build intelligent manufacturing centers. To realize this goal, the country passed a principle-based framework under the Law on Digital Technology Industry in mid-2025, and within less than three months expedited a draft Law on Artificial Intelligence to replace that framework. Enacted 10 Dec. 2025, and effective 1 March 2026, Vietnam's first standalone AI law positions the country among early adopters in the region, emphasizing a pro-innovation stance that balances growth with safeguards. As a clear manifestation of the Brussels effect, the law focuses on risk-based management with risk classification and concepts similar to that under the EU's AI Act. Notably, it fully supersedes the nascent AI provisions in the Law on Digital Technology Industry, which took effect 1 Jan. 2026, consolidating oversight under a unified framework to streamline compliance. Fundamental principles The AI Law's foundational principles, outlined in Article 4, prioritize human-centered AI that safeguards human rights, privacy, national interests and security while ensuring compliance with Vietnam's Constitution and...
