#IFComp
IFComp 2025, around since 1995, is (likely) the longest-running videogame creation contest.

Text adventures contests go back to near the beginning: what about Comp 1983?

I start into the games of the Falsoft contest, and the conditions which led to their creation.

This continues the story, more or less, from Rainbow Adventure (1982). I knew I had this particular set of games looming, and since the results of IFComp 2025 were announced a few weeks ago it seem…

Anyway I should say this again now that the competition is over, but my favorite game out of the 30 or so I played in this year's IFComp was @amesyflo.bsky.social 's 'The Witch Girls' ifdb.org/viewgame?id=...

Blah blah anecdata blah blah bias but also: IFComp is over and as far as I can tell (the results page doesn't show the disclaimers, frustratingly) not one game that used an LLM for writing cracked the top half of the standings. Most are clustered towards the bottom.

3XXX: NAKED HUMAN BOMBS got 30th place in ifcomp, which isn’t bad at all for a pretty out there title.

it was the second largest competition with a lot of good entries: ifdb.org/viewcomp?id=...

and i got positive emails and responses to the game, so i’m cool with that. that was fun.

IFComp allow ChatGPT-generated entries?

For a supposed celebration of an artistic form comprised so heavily of the written word, that's, mm,

I think the word I'm reluctantly circling is "suicide"

My games are personal. People usually don't get them. And yet, I submit them in IFComp, where a lot of people will play them. Then I hear from the people who don't get them, and what they say is usually unintentionally hurtful. Because they are talking about personal things.

More belated updates to my personal/professional website, now updating the interactive fiction section, to add my 2024 IFComp game, and mention - but not give the title yet - my next game due for release, which will also target IFComp, hopefully later this year. vivdunstan.co.uk/interactive-...

Reminded of April 1 Source Code Amnesty Day for interactive fiction games, I've just uploaded Inform source code for my IFComp 2024 entry Bad Beer. Source uploaded to IFArchive, and will take some days to process. Maybe ready by April 1st or soon after? Fab initiative. www.ifwiki.org/Source_Code_...

Some brief musings on "Parser versus choice-based interactive fiction" with reference to my games Border Reivers (IFComp 2018), Napier's Cache (SpringThing 2020) and my upcoming IFComp 2024 game Bad Beer. With thoughts on which model an author should choose. vivdunstan.dreamwidth.org/525756.html

“inspired by” recent events in the uk and on itch, i’m currently working on a short IF game (ink) that’s a cross between nukitashi and onimai for IFComp.

i don’t expect to place highly in this competition, but i hope it makes a clear statement about what i think on adult media expression.

Delighted to fire up Inform interactive fiction writing system for first time in too many weeks (neuro illness plus covid) and work again on my intended entry for IFComp this year. I love coding in Inform - it's a ridiculously fun IDE, more like playing a text adventure game than traditional coding.
