We drift to the patter of raindrops on canvas, safe and dry at our table-for-two beneath the broad patio umbrella. The door of the tiny café lies open to the soft, grey dawn, the rich smell of coffee and fresh pastries teasing the air with the promise of warmth and butter. The cobbled street is all but empty, lamps flickering, as if caught, like us, between sleep and wakefulness. There’s a glorious near-quiet; just the rain, the subtle clatter of porcelain and hiss of espresso coming from the shop, and a trio of mourning doves cooing softly on a wrought-iron fence across the way. A perfect moment in time, suspended forever in memory, another page in this book we write together. With an imagined street scene for my wife, here's some more (US) morning mellow.
