IIRC, at my grad school the two largest groups of international students were from India and China so eeck

(going off of "previous students did a survey about how different groups communicated, what apps etc., since that's what library/InfoSci students DO" lol)

Good Things Foundation @GoodThingsFdn have launched an interactive learning platform designed to demystify artificial intelligence for everyone. It's broken down into simple, manageable lessons so that users can learn at their own pace. A really good resource, well worth a look.

my institution is also going in this direction. alums and current students got a survey over the summer asking us to pick the new name for the (already merged) compsci/datasci/infosci school, most of them mentioned AI, zero mentioned libraries

some questions i have: are librarians only now aware of AI bc of its commercial popularity? was there not any awareness of the existing InfoSci/Communication scholarship abt the automation of algorithms? has the tech industry ever been willing to listen to those that can’t stop the flow of capital?

Excited to be applying for PhD programs soon! I’m interested in queer + trans technology, social computing, and game design. Ultimately, I hope to bring a critique of power to my studies of technology. Would really appreciate any advice/connections, especially if you’re an academic in HCI or InfoSci

I do feel like public speaking is distinct from public improv, especially when we're so trained (in our discipline) to go off of copious notes or fully-written scripts.

When I learned the CS/InfoSci folks tend to just use a rough outline *for group talks* I kinda bluescreened.

yeah the downfall of the us govt is ultimately the cause but there were admin & comm failures closer to me that had a bigger impact. delivering bad news is a responsibility that requires moral courage, something which is absent in too many places here. ironic that infosci sucks at providing info

Immediately goes to my to read pile in early summer. I need a new book to focus on in the last 4 weeks of my digital divides class (350-480 undergrads in CS/data/infosci pursuing ethnic studies requirement) because Weapons of Math Destruction is starting to get just a bit dated.

Perhaps novelty should not be as important a factor in research. I'd argue that in CS/InfoSci that's one of the primary reasons our disciplines suffer from paper churning that results in far too much incrementalism and far too little emphasis on real, substantial concern about broader impacts.

No one is following me for my thoughts on InfoSci anyways lol they're either following me for wolf titty that I haven't posted in months. I don't know why I even feel the need to say that I guess I don't want u to feel disappointed if you expected some kinda rallying cry at the end of this. end/

Is this what I think it is? Flipping the #narrative from most of #history to instead be all about the #women?

Anything else to say about the #book recommendation?

I see a lot of #skeets or whatever you want to call them done as #threads #🧵 so it looks like we at least need #wordcount doubled, maybe increased 3-4x. Especially since I think we should be #tagging so things can be found.
