Good Things Foundation @GoodThingsFdn have launched an interactive learning platform designed to demystify artificial intelligence for everyone. It's broken down into simple, manageable lessons so that users can learn at their own pace. A really good resource, well worth a look.

my institution is also going in this direction. alums and current students got a survey over the summer asking us to pick the new name for the (already merged) compsci/datasci/infosci school, most of them mentioned AI, zero mentioned libraries

some questions i have: are librarians only now aware of AI bc of its commercial popularity? was there not any awareness of the existing InfoSci/Communication scholarship abt the automation of algorithms? has the tech industry ever been willing to listen to those that can’t stop the flow of capital?

AAUP just published a report on artificial intelligence and academic professions. It’s focused on the impacts of AI policies to academic workers, but succinctly discusses many issues. I believe I’ll assign to my master’s InfoSci students:

Artificial Intelligence and Academic Professions
Educational technology, or ed-tech, including artificial intelligence (AI), continues to become more integrated into teaching and research in higher education, with minimal oversight. The AAUP’s ad hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Academic Professions was formed under the assumption that faculty members are best positioned to understand and improve teaching and learning conditions, including the development and implementation of institutional policies around educational technology. The committee's report includes survey findings and recommendations.

Excited to be applying for PhD programs soon! I’m interested in queer + trans technology, social computing, and game design. Ultimately, I hope to bring a critique of power to my studies of technology. Would really appreciate any advice/connections, especially if you’re an academic in HCI or InfoSci

I do feel like public speaking is distinct from public improv, especially when we're so trained (in our discipline) to go off of copious notes or fully-written scripts.
When I learned the CS/InfoSci folks tend to just use a rough outline *for group talks* I kinda bluescreened.

Perhaps novelty should not be as important a factor in research. I'd argue that in CS/InfoSci that's one of the primary reasons our disciplines suffer from paper churning that results in far too much incrementalism and far too little emphasis on real, substantial concern about broader impacts.
