Now, some of the above technical details may be up for debate.

The part that's definitely not up for debate is: Messianic Judaism is not Judaism. It's Christianity. *Every* Jewish denomination agrees on this. And they can't even agree on whether God exists!

Some denominations don't treat Halacha as binding, and how they handle converts away from Judaism is probably not as specific.

Whereas "Messianic Judaism is not Judaism" is not Jewish law, it's just a fact.

As a result, the idea of “converting” feels very weird. If you already believe that many rivers can flow into the same ocean, who do you convert?? Plus Hinduism, perhaps like Judaism, is as cultural as it is religious. So you can’t really abandon it wholesale w/o abandoning who you are. That’s all.

I know Adam Kinzinger @adamkinzinger.substack.com doesn't want kudos. He is too humble for that.

But he must know, (even before I watched "The Last Republican), I consider him what in Judaism we call a "Tzadik".

A righteous person, a person of integrity & kindness.

Thank you, Adam. 🙏🏼❤️

Antisemitism has been a near constant thread in right-wing politics in overt or latent forms, but many willingly excused it owing to the right’s staunch Zionism (rooted in geopolitical and Christian theological concerns). Recent events show why conflating Zionism and Judaism endangers Jewish people.

What a surprise, the Nazi wants to claim her Judaism when it's convenient to use as a weapon.

These people are the worst.

🧵This is an area where it pays to be precise.

It's technically true that "Once a Jew, always a Jew." But a Jew who converts to Christianity (including "Messianic Judaism") is considered an apostate. And apostates are excluded from the Jewish community.
Judaism has kept gates for Jewish identity since the time of Ezra the Scribe. They have been debated revised but they have always existed.

But “Christians are not Jews” is sort of the ONE standard we all keep, alongside the oneness of G-D.

Judaism is like Math: it might be hard to discover new things, but you could spend your life learning what exists and it would not be a waste, and the applications are without end

"No one conflates Zionism and Judaism other than those with an extreme far right or Islamist agenda"

"All anti Zionists are [antisemitic] by definition"

Phenomenal.
No one conflates Zionism and Judaism other than those with an extreme far right or Islamist agenda.

Some Zionists are antisemitic but all anti Zionists are by definition. You can’t claim to be a friend of the Jewish people and support a Palestinian pogrom against the place where half of them live.

Did your mother convert to Christianity or to Judaism? Were you Baptized? Were you raised Christian? Did you have ANY connection to Judaism growing up?

Christians have been trying to Columbus Jewish culture for a while now so yeah, we’re especially wary.

My extremely lukewarm take is that contemporary normative Islam and contemporary normative rabbinic Judaism have way more in common with each other than the latter has with Christianity and particularly American Protestantism.
I am always bummed when I see Islamaphobia coming from the Jewish community. Every conversation I have had about religion with a Muslim colleague or friend has only highlighted our similarities or deepened my understanding of our shared stories.

It's even performative: she was crying how she couldn't convert to Judaism because she's trans when know so many Jewish trans ppl who converted after transition.

Turns out she was reading extreme traditionalist Jewish literature, not reform.

In Judaism "Israel" is a metonym for "the people Israel" i.e. the Jewish community. Satmars in particular are non-Zionist and would specify the state of Israel if that's what they were referring to

Ahh, I see, so "messianic Judaism" is Judaism, but "Messianic Judaism" isn't. Capitalization is fun!

As a leftist Jew myself, you don't stop being Jewish because you're baptized. Judaism is passed down matrilineally, and you can be a Jew who's violating the commandments, but it doesn't stop you being Jewish. Jews for Jesus are not Jewish at all, rather, they're Christians pretending to be

"There's more than one way to do Judaism"

There's only one CORRECT way of doing Judaism, and unless you light the Hanukkah candles in descending order, you're not doing it.
Everyone is equally invalid

Pope Leo will do more to build bridges with Jews - The Times of London

Nostra Aetate ended the Catholic Church’s hostility toward Judaism. It said the church “decries hatred, persecutions, displays of antisemitism, directed against Jews at any time and by anyone.”
