The dim light doesn’t help but she knows she has to be quick, it seems there’s nothing more than artifacts, some robes, a couple small trunks. But at the end of the aisle as in full display there is a pedestal with a crystal jar on top, covering a golden swirl key hanging from a hook.

As she approaches she notices there is a letter folded in front of the glass cover, the golden swirls adorn it.

“The Doves tower key, take under penalty of dea—Someone’s comi—“ Mercy dives to the ground and crawls backward to hide inside one of the shelves and carefully pushes some cobweb covered artifacts as she hugs her legs to make herself small.
The noise of footsteps coming in make her turn towards the door, but also finds that beside her is a mummified corpse. A muffled sound is barely heard as she covered her mouth not to scream.

I first came awarw of this idea in Robert Harris' recent novel "The Second Sleep" where the title has a kind of double meaning.
Didn't realise it came from such relatively recent research. He even quotes Ekrich on the first page.

Fascinating

(The novel itself is decent, if not his best)
