Tried to stay firm & calm, and hopefully that rdp house will become reality for Karin. I'm just shell shocked after my brush with S.African style officialdom today. It was so slack and felt messy and a bit hopeless all round. At one point I almost cried. But we made progress in the end!
A summary of an important section of South Africa's brilliant constitution regarding housing. It's so sad that most of our working politicians have disappointed so many SA people, still after 30 years of "freedom". It really is a gangster state. But i wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Karin on right has been waiting to build a house in Hornlee for over 25 years, while newcomers from further away are given houses and land. She is a descendant of the original koi or san people, a widow with 4 kids, and very poor, is a real challenge in South Africa. Despite this, she has a heart of gold, runs soup kitchens for the hungry and is an all round survivor and formidable woman. Part of the Hornlee suburb of Knysna South Africa

Today we saw Two-tailed Pasha and African Grass Blue, two butterflies at the extremes of scale in Europe, the pasha a mighty insect, the blue vanishingly diminutive. Both delightful!

Had a really lovely long walk (hour and a half) around Leisure Island in Knysna today! Haven't been here much before but it's beautiful and a great place for bird watching.

Forest canary - have only seen one of these a few months ago
Knysna turaco - first time I've seen one in months, but often hear them croaking somewhere nearby
Common Waxbill - had a flock of 15 of them visit today

We have been told the Knysna estuary, (mistakenly called a lagoon or a lake, by many), is one of South Africas most precious bodies of water.
But our local "leaders" have allowed rampant development without upgrading sewers. What is an acceptable level of e- coli elsewhere? See whitewashed results
Many of the places not highlighted in red have suspiciously low figures of e-coli. Tests were probably taken on incoming tide. Most are in upmarket areas. Their sewage overflows too. Our town is dying, death by 1000 cuts. We're at about 900 cuts. These results might affect tourism, god forbid. I don't trust them at all. So, "beware of flesh eating bacteria" signs are needed on shoreline. Looking towards knysna heads from "lake" Brenton. Its not a lake though.

I watched Knysna destroyed for tourism and development, and the place that it once was - all magic and beauty - was lost.

Eventually I wrote a fantastical version of that reality - how it never happened, and magic stayed wild.

Once upon a time, we had a wood and iron beach cottage in family for 5 generations. Bought in 1915, Sold in 2019. The new owners demolished it, but they gave us the old sash windows. We have the memories forever
