I’m being told to say we’re both very happy with this arrangement! My all-time favourite book is "Six of Crows" by Leigh Bardugo, ft Fantasy Goro Akechi. I adore Dark Academia, Noir, Horror, and Memoirs! My preferred fanfic soup is Canon Divergence, Role Swap, Accomplice AU, and of course, Freak4Freak. Like hell it doesn’t. Goro digs split nails into chipped wood as he sags through the door frame. His breath rattles and his head fogs before vomit spews hot from his throat. Spit hangs in blood-red ribbons and the hand cradling the hole in his gut grows wet and warm. His left leg goes numb and useless as he drags it past the stench of garlic and stomach acid to his desk. Alone, past the searing in his chest, he hears them. The heavy thuds. The hushed whispers and creaking of lice-infested steps from all sides. Fumbling orders in the dark as they scurried through his home like rats. Bubbling fools. Goro couldn’t contain his grin. Sitting against the flat of his desk, he smiles at the open cross-bag crusted stiff from blood and a zipper of wires and black metal smiles back. This is how it should be. There’ll be no trial or hangman’s rope. No sagging maggot-ridden skin or blackened teeth from receding gums. No, he built this hell. It’s only fair, he burns with the rest of them. His hand doesn’t shake as he kisses his mother’s charm or when the blinking red button slides between his fingers. He did so terribly hate to be left behind. Feeling eyes on him, his fingers freeze at the hilt of the detonator as the scent of chicory coffee slips in like an ill wind. His body goes rigid as his gaze lifts to the sight of the cat-like nails and the mouth he’s kissed all his life smeared in blood. His tongue drowns in spit and copper. His vision wobbles and slides as he shakes. No, damn you, no...

Is “whump” a genre? 🙃 The rain always makes Goro’s wing-spots ache. “Lousy weather.” The barkeep of Tavern Leblanc nods toward the door as Goro closes it behind him. “Can I get you something to warm you up?” “Coffee. Any blend so long as it’s strong.” The words are forced, ground out in pain; Goro softens his tone. “Please.” When the barkeep ducks down to retrieve a jar of beans, Goro discreetly rubs his shoulder. Pain trickles like poison from the severed bone-ends pressing into flesh. So he settles his eyes and his anger on the barkeep: bespectacled, messy-haired, deceptively nondescript. Goro watches as he grinds the beans. His are nimble hands, fleeting of touch yet almost impossibly dexterous. A thief’s hands, perhaps. Goro takes a seat at the bar, clasping his hands in his lap so that they don’t wander to his back. Like the barkeep, Leblanc looks unimpressive, patchwork in a way that might be charming if Goro cared for such aesthetics. Its walls are asymmetric and asynchronous, the aged amber of maple stark where it seams against the ashy brown of new oak. There’s a leak pooling into a bucket on a booth’s tabletop. A radio spits static at the end of the bar. “House blend.” The barkeep sets a steaming mug on the counter. His eyes are sharp behind his glasses as he watches Goro take his first sip. “It’s delicious.” Somehow, it isn’t a lie. “May I know my barista’s name?” The barkeep’s eyes crinkle as he smiles. “Ren. Glad you like it.”

So you can see why I like writing about shuakeshu. “...I know we never say what we’re really thinking but can I be brutally honest for once?” He could feel the way Goro stiffened under his hold. “Go ahead.” “I don’t want to go today.” A sharp inhale from Goro’s end urged him to continue. “Not because I agree with Maruki—I don’t think this is right. I just— it’s not fair for anyone. It’s certainly not fair to you.” The light weight on his back moved to his shoulders as Goro gripped him, his nails digging in as he pulled Ren from his neck and forced him to sit up more. He let his own arms fall around Goro’s waist in a loose hold. “Ren Amamiya, if you're considering leaving me in this reality I will never talk to you again. I don’t care if you think it’s better—I’ll go fight Maruki myself.” Ren didn’t let him finish, he let his hands come up to grip Goro’s jacket on both sides and prayed that this would get his feelings through. He didn’t know how else to express just how in love he’d been with him from the moment they’d met. It was reckless and cruel to them both but he needed Goro to understand just how heartbroken he was about their imminent future at this exact moment. He leans in and kisses him hard.

Yes, from some anime boy version, how did you know? :0 I'm a sucker for cool worldbuilding, but I've also got a penchant for found family, hurt/comfort, and slice of life! I'll read mostly any genre as long as it's written well! You may therefore be unsurprised that I like P5. Go figure. :p On a particularly quiet day in the middle of August, there’s no one around but himself. Soft music wafts from the small speaker at the end of the counter, and Ren busies himself with a required reading for his coursework. Books are another thing that he’s taken a liking to, for various reasons – chief of those being that black-and-white books look the same even when the colors are faded. The sound of a chiming bell alerts Ren to the arrival of a new customer. He raises his eyes to greet them, and he comes face to face with bright, jazzy crimson. “I see this place hasn’t changed,” Akechi Goro says mildly, sliding into a seat—his seat—like it’s 2016 and things are okay and he hasn’t caused Ren’s world to burst into pops of color for the second time. When Ren turns away to compose himself, everything is as it was years ago. The burnt umber of the floorboards and the dusty blue of the refrigerator and the deep red of Sayuri’s shirt all jump out at him, and he wonders if it was always this bright, always this dazzling. When he raises his hand to a jar of coffee beans, he sees every blue-green vein under his skin, details that tend to get lost and muddied when things fade to gray. You’re alive, is what Ren almost says, though he doesn’t, because Akechi would definitely be an ass about him ‘stating the obvious’ or whatever. It’s not like this conversation was great the first time around, words spoken amidst empty gray washing machines in the little laundromat across the street..

Akechi scoffed. “Yeah, it’s a bunch of cobwebs. This place is overrun with spiders,” he mocked. “Biggest fucking spider I’ve ever seen, then,” Ren wittily replied, being rewarded with a breathy laugh from Akechi. He didn’t have time to bask in the sunlight because the ghost started hissing more aggressively, certainly offended. “Oh, hey, sorry, I know you’re not a spider, sorry…” He raised his hands apologetically. It settled back in the corner. “Okay, let’s try extracting something from this… person.” “Are you unsure if it is a person? What else would it be?” Ren gave it a hard look. It was definitely a person, at some point or the other. It didn’t feel demonic even if it looked a bit like one, yet whatever emotion or terrible act done to it or by it kept it tethered to their realm, has stripped it of its humanity and taken front stage on what it was at that time. “I don’t wanna assume its gender, Akechi, come on,” Ren quipped, giving him a teasing look. “Whatever you say.” Akechi rolled his eyes to fight off the smile curling on his lips. “Now, how do we proceed?”

Beautiful. Ryuji's best man speech was sweet. It was full of anecdotes he really shouldn't share, and he got stomped on his foot by Makoto for trying to share them anyway, then shared them anyway, much to everyone's mix of exasperated moans and amusement. Akira, already lightly tipsy, just laughed harder and harder at every comment. Even Akechi couldn't help the grin growing on his face, his gloved hand loosely inside his husband's for the entire time. “No, but really,” Ryuji was just saying. “Back then, we all were slowly getting behind the whole 'he's a deadly assassin who murdered two of our parents' thing.” “Ryuji, for God's sake, at least lower your voice,” Makoto hissed, but Ryuji – also incredibly tipsy – ignored her. “And we were all meeting in that stuffy little room wondering how to contact him and know what Akira said? Remember what he said, everyone?” Akechi turned to Akira, who grinned back at him and kissed the tip of his nose softly, ignoring his husband's grimace. “He said, 'I have his number, actually.'. Makoto was all like, trying to find out how to get his number from Sae without much of a fuzz and just like that. Our leader announced to the whole room of confused Phantom Thieves-” – “Ryuji!” Makoto sighed, tone completely exasperated now – “... that he had his number all along and apparently went on several dates with him behind our backs the entire time?” “Morgana knew,” Akira informed him between laughter. “It wasn't behind your backs, I just... kept it to myself. You'd have made fun of me for being a nerd if you heard about our spicy aquarium dates.” “I got tickets from a colle–” “Ohhhh, you're really sticking to that story, honey?”

Some of my favorite novels include Leviathan Wakes (Expanse Series), Uprooted, Daughter of the Moon Goddess, and Six of Crows. “I’m not just grieving over you,” Akira said with a sniff, his voice beginning to crack, “I-I’m grieving over the people we were together when all pretenses dropped that died in February. I’m grieving over the way you made me feel, and—and how I won't ever feel that way again. I’m grieving over the conversations we’ll never have, the closure we’ll never get from all the shit we survived, the apology I’ll never get and never give from all the harm we did to each other. I’m grieving over everything we could have been and will never get to be. “You were always special to me, Goro.” His given name rolled easily off his tongue this time, perhaps even easier than the tears rolling down his face. “And always will be. I would have told you this, over and over and over again—as many times as you needed to hear it, in as many ways as I could so that you’d believe me.” The stuttering breath he took did nothing to calm his nerves, but it was now or never. “I’ve never been in love before, but the borrowed time we spent together in January felt an awful lot like what I’d hoped the beginning of love to be,” Akira confessed, his vision blurring Akechi into a kaleidoscope of bleeding colors. With his free hand, he roughly wiped his face. “I’m so sorry it wasn’t enough.”

My favorite book is No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai partially because it reminds me of the anime Bungou Stray Dogs and the anime character Dazai but also because I enjoy older Japanese literature! It's hard to read mostly due to its contents being not very joyful but it's still my favorite book because of how realiTic the portrayal of mental illness is written ^_^. I've been a Persona fan since I first played 4 on the Vita in high school, and I've been writing and publishing fic for about five years now! I'm a big fan of sci-fi, fantasy, and intrigue, with one of my favorite books being the manga Liar Game (I can't wait for the anime!). When writing fanfic though I love canon-compliant angst and a good enemies to lovers story! Akechi may not have recognized him earlier, but even the hands of time can’t hide him from Akechi this close. The instant Akechi recognizes him, he reacts in the most characteristic way possible—violently. With a click, Akechi’s seatbelt rockets off his body. He makes a move for the door, but Amamiya beats him to it, holding its lock down. Akechi glowers, pointedly staring at the window as if he intends to break out. Feeling responsible for the conflict, Maruki throws his hands up in a gesture of peace. “I assure you that I mean no harm, Akechi-kun.” “Shove that sentiment up your ass,” Akechi snarls, the smell of alcohol heavy on his breath. Maruki knows that he has no chance of resolving the situation. Amamiya, however, is more than capable of soothing Akechi. He takes off both their gloves so that he can reassuringly thumb the back of Akechi’s hand and presses a tender kiss to his lips. Akechi’s frown neutralizes, then gives way to the smallest and subtlest but undeniably there smile Maruki’s ever seen. Amamiya gently laughs at the change in his attitude and whispers something in Akechi’s ear. The scene before him is so intimate that Maruki feels like a voyeur. He fixes his gaze on his steering wheel, mindlessly tapping along its smooth surface as he waits. An expectant cough breaks Maruki out of his monotony. He turns back to see Amamiya nudging Akechi. Akechi scoffs, looking out the window instead of forward...

As breathtaking as the view is in the open air, the bite of early autumn nearly stings his dry eyes to tears. Watery or not, the way Akira’s shoulders hunch up to brush the bottom of his earlobes in a futile attempt to retain a scrap of warmth catches in his peripheral, as well as the way his boyfriend still refuses to meet his gaze. A playful grin sets his courage alight as he gently nudges Akira with his elbow, shuffling close enough to share body heat. “Hey. You’re going to catch a cold, idiot.” Akira finally turns to him with a hint of surprise etched in the curve of his raised eyebrows, although his rebuttal doesn’t get a chance to be heard before Goro softly tuts and harshly yanks the other’s hood on, intentionally using a little more force than needed, until Akira stumbles and falls forward into a kiss. It’s comforting and safe and warm – he’s always warm, Goro’s very own home away from home. Yet, Akira Kurusu is not his ‘other half’, because Goro finally knows after years of loathing and self-sacrifice that he is already a whole man; in the way that a planet is whole, the way that they are two newborn stars that revolve around each other in a binary system, drawn to each others’ gravity and burning with an unmatched intensity no one could ever hope to extinguish...

I'm so hyped!! Together with my long P5 fujo career (6 years and counting), I'm also a creative professional and an avid fantasy reader of all genres. You will see me champion The Locked Tomb and the Broken Earth cycles, but another formative work for me was His Dark Materials. My fanfic jam lies with Time Traveling, All Things Accomplices, Character Studies, and especially Angst. Like the scab of a still-healing scratch, like an obnoxious round pimple on his chin or cheek, like a hangnail stinging every time he moves or brushes his fingers, Akira Kurusu grates on Goro’s nerves in a way that makes the palms of his hands itch with the urge to act. It’s visceral, bitter, and hazy but it involves some kind of movement, some kinetic force at play, Goro is sure. Akira, who barely ever played billiards yet picked up enough skill to defeat him right-handed in a matter of months; Akira, who nonchalantly dragged him into a bathroom and messed with his hair and always tags along no matter what Goro brings up; Akira, who brightens and stands straighter like a houseplant finally being granted the mercy of water each time he enters the road of Penguin Sniper and finds Goro waiting at the usual spot. Akira, who is wiping clean the last cups of the day under the soft lights of Leblanc, wrapped in his moss-green apron and with a pinch hardening his gaze as a tough spot refuses to come off. Goro makes the residual coffee at the bottom of his cup swirl before drinking it. The extra bitter taste of the last remaining shot, by now gone lukewarm, coats his tongue and slides down his throat. Billiards matches weren’t enough. Chess games weren’t enough; nor idle discussions about washed-out philosophy concepts...

Even though Akira hadn't explained himself, the intention isn't all that hard to figure out. Akechi wouldn't listen to him if he tries to debate about how people aren't selfish—his probation should've provided him enough proof to refute his point—so he gives Akechi something that will depend on him to survive instead. Sure, maybe, people are selfish, Akira won't argue with him. But is Akechi the same as the rest of them? Is Akechi willing to let something die on his watch? It doesn't matter if Akechi knows whether or not he can take care of a goldfish. What matters is if he'll put in the effort. It may not be a responsibility that he chooses to have. Even so, it's still a living thing that is at the mercy of his hands. Hadn't he been exactly the same once? Helpless in the hopes that someone who loves him enough to at least try to care for him? Akechi wouldn't be at fault for not wanting to take care of the fish. Unlike Shido and his mother, Akechi didn't choose to have something he had to nurture. He wouldn't even be to blame if he decides to give it up and let it be taken care of by someone more competent. Yet Akechi still wants to try before throwing the towel, if only to prove that he won't be so quick to give up on him like they had. He is unwanted, yes, but aren't those who were abandoned deserve a fighting chance to be loved? To have their needs met regardless of what value they may eventually have? Akechi won't be like everyone else...

Playing Royal for the first time straight up changed my brain chemistry, so now all I can think about is Akechi and Joker... I normally like to read non-fiction, but I spend a decent amount of time reading fanfic, which is seemingly endless due to how many amazing writers there are in this fandom! Writer KJ Twitter | magatsula Tumblr | supremesanada AO3 | yosgay hey, i’m kj! i’ve been writing for persona since way back in the p3 and p4 days, and the world and characters have always stuck with me. ren and goro’s dynamic in particular has been a joy to explore and tease apart from the beginning, and i’m excited to have the opportunity to put them both in more situations. my favorite authors are chuck palahniuk, gillian flynn, and shirley jackson. i love a good mystery surrounded by off-the-wall descriptions and prose, and it's a huge inspiration in my own writing. Across the way, something catches Ren’s eye. A copy of the ferris wheel that’s been shrunk down and scribbled with loud patterns and bright color. He points with his chin. He has to laugh a little when he says it, but what the hell: “How about that one?” Akechi tilts his head the way a curious dog might. With pursed lips and a furrowed brow, he considers this like he considers everything. He looks it up and down, finger to his chin. He could be auditioning for the role, how well he sells it—but it’s so strangely natural. You’ve got the part for life, kid; Detective Number Two. A smile creeps onto Ren’s face. He pictures Akechi in the grocery store, magnifying glass out, to pick out a single apple for his lunch. And Akechi opens his mouth; looks at Ren, then stops up short. “What?” The way a smile can catch like the flu, man. Face reddening like you’re holding in a cough. “Nothing,” he says, and it’s just one grin for another. Akechi rolls his eyes, still. One hand on his hip, he allows, “All right then. Lead the way.” Yeah, it’s surrounded by merry-go-rounds and cartoon animals. And sure, they’re the only ones on line over four feet tall. Still—Ren can’t help himself. He gives Akechi a serious look. “You nervous?” “Oh, yes.” He nods, earnest. Ren tilts his head. “Are you planning to comfort me, Ren?” “Born ready.” Akechi smiles, warm up to his eyes. “I’ll hold you to that.”

I enjoy reading different genres and trying new things, but am always a sucker for interesting characters, angst, the power of friendship and bittersweet endings. If it made me cry (which isn't very hard to do), it did something very right! At the moment I think my favourite book is Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo - the dramatic finale to the Six of Crows duology! “Hey, Ren?” Ren turned to look at him, and Goro took his chance. He launched the water he had gathered in his arms up toward Ren with as much force as he could, and he had the pleasure of seeing him taken completely off-guard before his face was covered with seawater. He cackled as Ren spluttered, and there was a flash of anger in his face before he started laughing too. He swept his arm in a wide arc, sending a wave of water that clocked Goro in the jaw even as he turned his face away, and they started heading deeper into the water as they splashed each other with increasing force. The other people around gave them a wide berth, not keen to get caught up in the battle, and soon it seemed to be just them in the water. But as Goro stepped further away from Ren to get a better angle of attack, he slipped. His sure feet got caught in the shifting sand below, and Goro was unable to readjust before he started falling backward. He screwed his eyes shut against the inevitable saltwater, but before he could hit the waves one hand grabbed his wrist and another splayed across the small of his back, catching him just in time. Goro opened his eyes to the sight of Ren’s face consuming the sky, the eclipsed sun making the ends of his damp, dark hair glow, and as Goro stared into the face of this new sun he was Icarus, lost in the light.

When it comes to AkeShuAke, though, I also love how much variety people put into the complexity of their relationship -- for both the best of them and the worst of them. “They were ravens,” Kurusu repeated. “Not crows.” “I’m sorry?” “Ravens are bigger,” they said. There was a strange quality to their words, as though spoken with a swollen tongue. “Fluffy. Fuwafuwa.” “I see,” she said. “Not all corvids are crows,” they went on. Giving her one of their most terrible grins, they winced the moment after from the throb of using their facial muscles. “You’ve just got a bias.” She withheld the urge to jab a finger into their gut. “And yet you were able to pick up on those special little details as they pecked out your eyes.” “So you’re admitting I beat you on that?” Late, terribly late, her palm was against the opposite side of their face, no longer catching the thinned blood as it dripped from their chin to their chest. Akechi did not do so on purpose; she hadn’t personally placed her hand there, and yet it was. Worst of all, she couldn’t stare directly into their eyes to say – “No,” she murmured. “I am saying you are obsessed with me.”

I am in an enduring and devoted partnership with my beautiful wife the em dash. All else is secondary. My favourite genre is mystery, and my favourite book of the ones I've read recently enough to remember is Gideon the Ninth. My favourite type of fic to read or write are missing scenes or extensions of canon, usually digging into a theme or relationship that didn't get enough attention in canon. “So,” Akira says. “You’re alive.” “I’ve noticed,” Akechi replies. He still wears gloves, Akira notices. His hair is longer, and he’s wearing it tied back. Akira’s pretty sure Akechi hadn’t grown — he’d seen the brief frown flick across his face when he’d noticed Akira was taller than him now, an almost childish expression on the features of his adult face. Akira has to pinch himself, again, to convince himself he’s still not dreaming. That Goro Akechi — a living, breathing, twenty-eight-year-old, not the teenage ghost that’s been haunting Akira’s darkest moments for ten years — is really in front of him. “I missed you,” Akira says, because I mourned you longer than I knew you and I still wasn’t over it feels a bit too forward. “I thought you’d be better off without me.” Akechi takes a sip of his drink — some kind of soda, even though everyone else in the bar seems to be holding a cocktail glass or sharing a bottle of wine. “And I knew you’d never bring yourself to turn me down if I contacted you, so I decided to leave things as they were.” “Mhm.” Did that mean he would vanish again after this? Would that be worse than never knowing the truth? He could spend the rest of their life just asking Akechi every question in his head right now, but instead, he just stares at him, willing him not to turn translucent.

I love books of all types, but there's a special place in my heart for the Chronicles of Narnia (Prince Caspian is my favorite), Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings, and the Six of Crows duology. Fics wise, I love a good AU with way too much thought put into it. You can catch me on ao3 writing soulmate aus with too much time dedicated to worldbuilding. “Well?” Akechi asks. “Did you honestly think we had a chance?” It isn’t until a few seconds of uncharacteristic silence that Akira realizes he actually expects an answer to the question. Did they? Do they? Have a chance? He’s never really thought about it like that, so, “No?” Wait ― no. Wrong answer. “Yes? I don’t know.” Akechi scoffs. “Really? Some fucking leader you are, unable to even―” “Shut up,” Akira tells him. “You all thought you were such hot shit, didn’t you?” he sneers, ignoring Akira. “So sure you could change the world, make a difference where no one else could!” He laughs, sharp as broken glass. “But it was all nothing! Pointless! Just a bunch of kids stumbling in the dark and deluded into thinking they could change things! Honestly―” “Shut up ,” Akira says, with the same force he uses against enemy shadows and palace rulers high on their own power, because he can’t come up with a proper argument yet, but he knows that Akechi is fucking wrong, saying all this shit about the thieves because he can’t admit that he was right there― It takes Akira a second to realize that Akechi has actually shut up. Huh.

My fav book would have to be The Secret of Dragonhome by John Peel, a classic! Joker had just enough time to brace his hands in front of him before Goro impacted with him, slamming them both into the far wall. "Oof!" Joker hissed, his head hitting against the wall with a loud crack. If Goro had been more aware of himself, he would have winced, but instead his body swelled with pleasure to hurt hurt hurt. "Crow! Hold on!" Joker gritted his teeth, arms keeping Goro at length. Goro's claws were inches from his face, trying their best to gouge out those beautiful features. One good swipe, and he could break that nose, rip a gash in his cheek that his doctor would have to spend ages stitching up. He could make Joker hurt, make him cry, make him bleed and- "Akechi. I'm sorry." Goro's body stilled, muscles braced but frozen. Through his mad haze, he could make out the despondent look on Joker's face. His eyes burnt with that same flame Goro was ever drawn to. Piercing straight through Goro's crazed state to pin him in place. He panted heavily, unable to move, to stop himself nor continue. "You're hurting, aren't you?" Joker said softly. “I didn't realise. You need to let out your frustrations, don't you?" “...” Goro pressed his lips into a line, willing his muscles to relax. The power was still humming through him, and he didn't feel nearly as satisfied. There were still reserves to burn, and given how uneasy he felt, and how long it had been since he could last let loose, he didn't like Joker's chances if he stuck around. He had to scare him off. Before he did something he would regret. "Fuck off!" Goro roared. Joker flinched, clearly not expecting the response so loud in his face "Akechi-" "Get out of here before I fucking kill you," Goro seethed..

My absolute favorite book HAS to be Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett-- it's a beautiful, touching exploration of mortality & morality, with a healthy dash of goofy absurdism. A very close tie has to be The Thirty Names Of Night by Zeyn Joukhadar: a vivid exploration of a Syrian trans man's quest to rediscover his mother's life story! As for my favorite genre, I adore fantasy of all kinds!! Fun fact: I've read 47 books so far this year, most of them from my local libraries :) Did you know they have yuri at the library now. Did you know th-- The guilt begins as a twinge in Akira’s hipbone, like something’s coiling around it and exploring the top of his femur. It snakes up through his innards and writhes hot-cold-hot up through his spinal cord. By the time he has eaten the leftover curry he’d stashed in the fridge for moments like these he could fly with the force of it tugging him upwards, saying look, look what you did, look what you did wrong. More importantly, though: he has to go to work. He mentally allots the extra hours between now and his shift for distractions, because if he has to be left alone with his thoughts for one more minute he’s going to scream. When he heads out to the living room he throws on his bag and jacket with more speed than strictly necessary. “I’m heading out,” he calls over his shoulder, but when Goro is silent he turns to look. Goro, still on the couch, looks at him sidelong. “I love you.” It feels like a promise; it feels like a threat. Goro has a habit of saving I love yous like they’re the last box of a beloved cookie flavor, doomed to go out of stock in a week: savored, hoarded, given only as a special gift. Akira feels like it means something that he’s pulled one out now, of all times. “I love you,” he replies, taking one from his own stock and crushing it between his teeth.
