The relationship between the two men seems to date back to the time when both were at Silves. They shared a love for poetry and developed a love for each other. Ibn Ammar was Al-Mu'tamid's closest confidant, vizier, and was even known to share his bed.

An interesting/depressing example, can be found in the Inquisition records. While little direct evidence exists of same-sex relationships in early modern Europe, records show 500 sodomy trials in Portugal and almost 1000 in Aragon between 1570 and 1630.

There hasn’t always been support for LGBTQIA+ people who are bereaved – until same sex marriage, some people didn’t recognise us as widows. But queer widowhood has been with us as long as queer relationships.

Day 3 of #LGBTplusHM25: the colossal, white marble #Antinous Mondragone c. AD 130, discovered near the ancient Roman villas of Frascati perhaps as early as 1687. Described by JJ Winckelmann in 1764 as 'the glory and crown of art in this age as well as in others.’ It is now displayed in the Louvre. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 8 of #LGBTplusHM25, as it’s the weekend, our first modern #Antinous: the antique Carrara marble Jonah in the Chigi Chapel of Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome, based upon the recently discovered Antinous Farnese. Raphael's only sculptural design, it was completed c.1520 by his pupil Lorenzetto. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 18 of #LGBTplusHM25: a small, 24.1 cm, slightly battered but elegantly sculpted marble head of #Antinous as Dionysos Although original provenance is unknown, the piece was gifted in 1996 to the Metropolitan Museum by the actor Bronson Pinchot, in recognition of his mother, Rosina Asta Pinchot. 🏳️‍🌈

A common trope that we hear is that anything LGBT is an export of the West. Under the cover of this lie, LGBT rights are trampled on around the world.

In fact, as we'll see, oftentimes it's been the opposite: the West has been key to exporting homophobia. 🧵
