There’s a slight lul in the album’s centre. “Love Song”, “Cinnamon Girl” and “How To Disappear” are a bit safe and lack the intricate arrangements on the album’s first few tracks. Fortunately it picks up around “California”, which blossoms with its dense production and passionate backing vocals. “The Greatest” is also a late album highlight. There’s plenty of 60’s and 70’s production choices, especially the twangy, lo-fi electric guitar. It’s fitting for a song so fixated on nostalgia, as Lana sings: “I miss New York and I miss the music / Me and my friends, we miss rock 'n' roll”

Lana firmly puts her character to bed, and NFR is the first album where she sounds completely sincere. On “Happiness Is A Butterfly” she grapples with her trauma and how it draws her to other broken people: “If he's a serial killer, then what's the worst / That can happen to a girl who's already hurt?”. She concludes the record with her most honest track. Reflecting on her personal turmoil, she tries to push through it but lacks confidence: “A modern day woman with a weak constitution, 'cause I've got / Monsters still under my bed that I could never fight off.” The character of Lana Del Rey was a shield to hide her vulnerabilities and now that she’s willing to confront those aspects of herself, her songwriting matures as well

NFR is the first truly classic Lana Del Rey record. The annoying sides of her writing have mostly vanished and Jack Antonoff offers some of his best production work. It’s not just one of Lana’s best, it’s one of the defining singer-songwriter albums of the 2010s

Lust For Life is the last true Lana pop album, and moving forward she embraces the beatnik poet inside her, pivoting in a more thoughtful singer-songwriter direction. The result is Norman Fucking Rockwell, a high point in Lana’s career and a radical change in her approach to songwriting

NFR makes its boldest statements in the first half. There’s a confident lead piano on the opener, akin to a Fiona Apple track. Harps and violin accompany Lana as the song builds, creating a gentle, ornate soundscape around her. Lana’s voice echoes through the pillowy instrumentals of “Mariner’s Apartment Complex.” There’s a surprising amount of complexity beneath the lead acoustic guitar, and you’ll hear all sorts of strings, backing vocals, warm electric guitar and even some gentle synths building out from Lana’s subdued delivery. “Venice Bitch” is a Lana Del Rey classic. The guitars glide effortlessly alongside the warm bed of violin, horns and Lana’s playful vocal melody. The chorus is gorgeous, the strings swell and the song loses itself in a swirl of instrumentals and hazy effects. Lana makes great use of the 9+ minute runtime, with lots of synth flourishes and psychedelic guitars blanketing the track

Even if she’s still in love with the same self-destructive men that characterize her earlier albums, her role in these relationships is different. The records opens with “Goddamn, man-child / You fucked me so good that I almost said ‘I love you’“ as Lana shoots back at all her terrible ex-boyfriends. On “Mariners Apartment Complex” she’s finally showing agency in her relationships: “You lose your way, just take my hand / You're lost at sea, then I'll command your boat to me again.”
