#LateDiagnosed
Why #latediagnosed #autistic people often care about and try to explain their "level of functioning" (which I suggest isn't useful): a 🧵
This is probably a path many late-diagnosed #autistic people follow:
1. Learning diagnosis
2. Denial/confusion
3. Needing desperately to explain to everyone "why I'm weird, there's, like, an actual reason!"
4. "But I'm not THAT weird! I'm level one/mild/Asperger's/etc."

I realized I was autistic about a year ago (prob ‘level 1’/low support needs). It’s been a journey. Here are some insights I’ve had (shared in comments):

Since I began to understand myself properly, and especially since my autism diagnosis this year, something unexpected has happened.

My anxiety is higher.
My tolerance is lower.
Things I once managed fairly easily now feel much harder.

It can look like regression. 1/7

There are certain intense memories that I now realize were where my #autism abutted with #neurotypical norms.

My 6th grade #teacher used me as example to teach the word #eccentric

As a late diagnosed #autistic person, I've struggled with how to "categorize" myself and how to explain myself to NTs. I think this is a journey many #LateDiagnosed people go through. Self doubt of diagnosis, how to cope with new understanding of self, 1/
You’re not mildly autistic.

This is going to be a tough take for some out there but that doesn’t exist.

I am sick and tired of seeing posts that describe themselves or others as mildly.

Thanksgiving REALLY stretched to breaking my executive function this year.
Or does it always and this year I just understood what was happening?

Seven Harmful Myths
