Mr Knightly has his stately home burnt down by Luddites after he slaughters starving agricultural labourers with the local Yeomanry. They were only protesting about the high price of bread.

No, this is the view of neo-luddites, including figures popular on here like Brian Merchant and Paris Marx.

I couldn't attend the No Kings event because I'm currently a coughing sneezing lump under a blankie. So I did the next best thing: worked on a story of a world where the Luddites don't lose. In any time you are, in any way you can, standing up to those who deny our humanity is worth doing.

between the luddites and the clanker-haters we've gotten fast fashion and faster content. the problem is still the same though: are we gonna keep selling each other garbage so the same old white guys eat steaks in bunker-mansions, or are we gonna build systems

When neo-luddites say "What'll people buy when they can't work because AI has taken all the jobs"? That's the sort of contradiction Marx was talking about. He thought that this would end with the collapse of capitalist systems and the taking of these means of production by the workers.

Marx was critical of the Luddites, or at least called them out as misguided. He saw the social benefits of the automation and thought they should be pulling for the greater good than their own self-interest

After going back and forth on the history of Luddites, I landed on the Bluesky antis really are the direct spiritual descendants of the Luddites
That is, they oppose this particular technology despite distributing the potential societal benefits, but to protect their place in the social hierarchy

But it’s way easier to say: listen here fuckwits, there’s only two positions on AI: my way or the highway, the idiot luddites or genius whiz kids. They treat views on AI as another IQ test to determine cultural fit for “who’s gonna make it”. Just like like they did for blockchain four years ago.

I'm specifically against gen AI that's exploiting the IPs of millions of creatives, consuming an inordinate amount of energy and fresh water, in some cases destroying families and lives, and aiding in the spread of misinformation and propaganda.

Found a cool online community for my fellow luddites and I’m totally addicted to posting on it. I’m constantly having to recharge my phone because I’m on it so much so much.
We share videos and picture and we’re even gonna make a dating app.

The Luddites: Weavers in England who wanted to work from home and not for someone who didn't work were shot, hanged or sendt to Australia, and has for centuries been associated with stupid opposition to progress. We got fast fashion, oligarchs, mountains of tekstile garbage, and overheating.

AI governance isn't about *more* rules, it's about *smarter* ones. Bureaucrats & Luddites won't secure humanity's future. We need agile, technically informed protocols guided by those building at the frontier. The stakes are civilizational. 🚀

Looks like China will lead the world to those new energies. Why do you put China first?

I like to think it will usher in ubi.
But history is littered with examples like the luddites frame breaking... Or the roll out of guillotines depending how badly the equality (and cruelness) of the equality gets. Meanwhile the majority suffer to one degree or another.

Luddites aren't socially conservative, I mean they can be I don't expect the average non technical anti AI artist to have nuance and they may very well be driven by self preservation alone. But it's not about opposing change, it's about opposing harmful applications of new technologies.
