This photo, taken along the Möðrudalsleið in North Iceland on a rainy day, captures a stark volcanic desert under a brooding sky. The foreground is a wide expanse of dark gravel and ash, its surface shifting in shades of charcoal and muted brown. In the middle distance, two small, jet-black volcanic cones rise from the plain - ancient and weathered, their slopes smoothed by centuries of erosion. Between the dark tones, a band of golden moss and a patch of fresh green vegetation add a subtle contrast. Beyond them, blue-grey mountains fade into the mist, their peaks shrouded by low, heavy clouds, creating an atmosphere both raw and otherworldly.

You’re standing on a dirt road made of reddish-brown sand, deep in the Icelandic highlands. The road curves gently to the left and disappears behind a rise. To the right, the view opens into a wide, flat valley basin. In the distance, you can see the road again as it crosses the sunlit plain before vanishing between the mountains that form the backdrop. The sunlight bathes the barren valley in a warm glow, broken only by a few soft shadows from the clouds above. The sky is a deep, vivid blue, with clouds slowly drifting in from the right.

Farm houses use peat for isolation.

Thank you, Jilly, really appreciate it! This is one of my favourite spots at the top of the pass on the Möðrudalsleið highland road with amazing views in every direction. The weather can be very inhospitable at times though.

My soul place in the highlands.
Most of the time, you’re completely alone. All you hear is the wind, and occasionally the call of a bird overhead. The view is ever-changing, shaped by the dance of light and clouds.
