Because many struggle with math…

Notably you don’t have to study math yourself to be afflicted with Math Fetishization Syndrome.

I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Trump's 50-year mortgage math is flawless: save $300 now, pay only $1.3 million later!

Ted Kaczynski, also famously good at math

Imagine thinking powerful people today are any good at math

also i assume being good at pre-k math is just like “this kid is counting to three crazy fast”

Do the math. It don’t add up

this is a rich text but my favorite part is that despite being presumably good at math, her husband is so illiterate that he cannot read a baby's report card

VC guys and economists love to be like "i can get away with anything because i'm good at math" and then be bad at math

As the parent of a child who is Very Good At Math and also spent many years being socially delayed (she’s doing a lot better now, cause we worked on it) … people do not actually put up with your bullshit just because of math.

iirc sf literally put this into practice in mathematics. the test scores showed black kids weren't doing well at math. so they just stopped teaching math in middle school

Those who believe "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" usually overestimate both what people will put up with, and their skill at math.
I've spent 20 years helping new engineers start careers, tip from a top recruiter: there's never any shortage of people who can write code that works (or do the art needed, etc), her challenge is finding people who can do that AND anyone wants to work with, friendly, communicate, take feedback

No one asked me to do the math but I did the math

the worst part is that for the people at the top "good at math"/sciencey is essentially a vibe one socially codes their way into by being minimally competent at informally discussing things actual math/science people do, unless (e.g.) Elon Musk has proven a theorem I didn't hear about.

obviously there’s nothing wrong with being good at math, and I also don’t believe that studying the humanities is some sort of magic anti-evil antidote, but our society has become truly pathologically unbalanced with how much Good At Math is valued over everything else

lotta people confusing "good at math" with "good at capitalism"

how to tell the difference:
if you're good at math you can still be a good person

I don’t mean to call Faine out but as somebody with a BA in English, a BS in math, and an MS in math, it bums me out to see science and humanities put in such opposition to each other, especially since the problem isn’t math but the dumb thing people think math is.

Imagine bragging about the Pre-K math scores. Wow he recognized a 2. Yeah it's better than the alternative sure. I excelled at math all the way up to calc 1. Didn't really mean shit.

There’s an implied Math = Computers = Unicorn Startup = Billionaire equivalency there that wouldn’t be if these people were good at math
November 12, 2025 at 1:24 AM
I was so good at math at around this same age that I was bumped up a grade level and I wasn’t good at math again until college (when I excelled in a class called “math for liberal arts majors” so was it really even being good at math 😂).

It's a good way to make sure your kid is good at math until he inevitably gets to a point where he's too disruptive for math class and can't advance further without intervention.

(Alt text: kids' parents are proud of math and don't care about social/emotional)

indeed, *actually* knowing a lot of math instead of just pretending that you do seems to insulate many people from Math Fetishization Syndrome
