#MNRR
Wait WHAT!?

Gut reaction: weird to split service between Amtrak and MNRR on a route like this.

But more service to Albany is exciting.

Maybe we can start talking electrification...?
ACTUAL GOOD TRANSIT NEWS ALERT: Metro-North will run to Albany, starting this spring.

And Amtrak is adding back one train to NYP-ALB and capping prices at $99.

Can you imagine all the coordination that happened with CSX or NS and then LIRR (maybe MNRR, too)...

Yes, very much, and a massive mistake that Pataki and the MTA couldn't get two railroads in the *same organization* to cooperate was something. No, MNRR, operating out of the 20+ tracks on the upper level would have been enough.

Would've been so much better for riders.

A very good tour of the Northeast Corridor, showing where and why Amtrak speeds fall behind.

I particular appreciate the emphasis that average speed is more important than top speed, although I'd have dived into more coverage of the MNRR section as it's so vital.

I mean this is clearly nonsensical since much of eastern queens is exclusively served by the LIRR. But even in the BX the MNRR mainline serves a unique market without any subway equivalent.

What's the limit to NH? 79mph?

I don't know about dispatch drama, but I assume MNRR doesn't play nice on the tracks it owns?

East of there it gets slower in places for track curvature reasons I believe.

RI, least rail friendly state gets all the speed....

Fare free transit discussions are generally in the context of flat-fare "city" service though, not zone based fares like MNRR (or out where I am, MBCR)

Tbh local trains could make even more stops.

Add a stop at Forest hills, some of the SLE stops, maybe some MNRR stops

Most MNRR travel now in the bronx is reverse commute because service to Bronx stations is abominable. Fordham, serving a major university filled with professional white people gets 2 TPH at best. Who is going to take that downtown when it costs 2x?

I managed to convince the Utica Queens to park at Poughkeepsie MNRR because Amtrak was too early and expensive for them, and the alternative was driving into Manhattan.

They still managed to almost miss the last train back…

I'm not sure I agree - Paris RER is semi usable as a metro replacement. Plus, as capacity goes, offs at Harlem should compensate for ons at Harlem to use MNRR as a super Express

Well Amtrak would have to actually discuss this with njt, MNRR, and now metro North

Not the 1st time this sort of thing has happened.
In 1991, Then MNRR pres Peter Stangl let a buddy operate a MNRR train thru the Westchester countryside.
Despite this, he was promoted to MTA chair.

If they can’t do passes, it would explain why MNRR and LIRR ditched OMNY.

Still not sure what’s supposed to happen to Bee-Line, NICE, Hudson Link, Suffolk Transit, etc. post-Metrocard.

It’ll be interesting to see what PATH does with passes on its Cubic-supplied TAPP when they retire Smartlink.

I dont disagree but the transition to a full through run system will require far more than “fixing” Penn. LIRR, NJT and eventually MNRR need more capacity down line. This means tons of station rebuilds, triple/quad tracking, junction rebuilds, and other improvements to maximize potential.
