Yes, I realize that listening to podcasts and music at maximum volume at every waking moment is damaging for my health but, in my defence, so is being left alone with my thoughts.

I play music at maximum volume on my earphones, I'm planning to be alive for a while but I don't know sign language. If I don't do something about that, my 40s are gonna be very interesting.

Good place to start fixing this though is to find your phones EQ (on iPhone is settings -> music -> EQ) and choose the preset "Small Speakers". It will lower your maximum volume slightly, but it does clarify the sound a good amount.
