#OTD 1491 Anne, the last independent duchess of Brittany bit.ly/2ErZhzP was forced to submit to the French, obliged to marry Charles VIII & then Louis XII. Anne was a great patron of arts & her Book of Hours is one of the last great mediaeval illuminated manuscripts.

haere.bsky.social Haere - accuses me of being a "patronising scold". Not so much slander really as just Mediaeval levels of sexism. He (you know it) deserves a go in a metal bridle rather than legal action.

idk I always found it easiest to explain with I have the code/software, but not the hardware to run it ???? I know what an apple looks like I'm not a mediaeval painter 😭 """how r u a colourblind artist with aphantasia""" idk god had to nerf me bc it knew I'd be too powerful otherwise haha

Absolutely. (had to look it up). There was a mediaeval thing, Swan stuffed with duck, stuffed with chicken, stuffed with quail. Sort of Russian meat doll.

It's a mediaeval anachronism, as I say. The monarch is just a symbolic puppet... funded by the taxpayer. Should have been abolished long ago.

It has rained all day. I took post-surgery cat for a checkup at the vet. (She’s doing ok.) I cleaned & cleared things & did the usefuls.

I finished 2 crochet dishcloths, crocheted a tree decoration, progressed granny square jumper no.1, & dedigned 2 crochet motifs.

Mediaeval music & firelight now🔥

I read it when it came out. Liked the cover art, but thought it just far too 'Californian hippie', dragging in refs to Atlantis, & using modern Wicca for her depiction of pre-Christian religion; also trying to fit characters from the mediæval French romances into post-Roman setting.

Perhaps a representative from the Church of England might like to accompany me on a tour of mediaeval ecclesiastical buildings in their ownership so that I can point out the thousands of images of actual demons which they seem to have forgotten...

“It is difficult to imagine a previous period when such an all-pervasive hopelessness was exhibited at all levels of British life”
Conveniently ignoring the Black Death, Dark Ages, mediaeval life, 1665, WWI, WWII, 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Mediaeval Christians would probably have been a-ok with depictions of the devil: they used to be all over churches. I've even seen one where a minor devil was wearing spectacles.

It's ridiculous right! No Kings they chant but allow this mediaeval manifestation!

@profaliceroberts.bsky.social Reading your book Domination (highly recommended!) I am struck by the parallel between the Roman collegia as described on pp 248-9 and the Guilds and Companies found in mediaeval England. I'm a member of the York Guild of Scriveners, so I've learned a little about them.

Lilith a hostage of Heaven ( in the mediaeval sense)?

The difficulty here in #Normandy is that timber, like stone, is/was routinely reused. We say that a roof structure may consist of, or contain, C15th timbers although we know the walls that support it are C16th. My own late mediaeval hall is dating and phasing nightmare for these sorts of reasons.

The only reason Europe isn't covered in collapsed mediaeval cathedrals is that they reused the stone for the next attempt at getting one to stay up. 😈

[Comical torture]

I hope that whoever decided that it should be fashionable for beds to have footboards that poke above the mattress was doomed to some form of mediaeval torture whereby they were put in a human-sized box with a bottom on a screw which was slowly and inexorably turned in order […]

Well, as I say, they keep dipping themselves in local rivers, they'll be shitting themselves inside-out, just like early mediaeval knights on crusade, and possibly dying of dysentery. Still, all in a good cause, eh?
