I don't really remember much of Hamtaro from it airing on Cartoon Network, but I am very fond of it because of the GBC game and First GBA Game which I can only describe as Dictionary-based Metroidvanias

Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a game I can play endlessly, but this was what truly got me into playing metroidvanias. A masterpiece that never gets old no matter how many times I play it. I love this game.

I don't think they're really opposed as microgenres. In my mind Metroidvanias are games where accessible routes through a world are opened up by getting new upgrades through the game and Soulslikes are third person action rpgs with precise dodging and bonfire-like respawn systems

I know it’s just because I like bugs but it’s funny how many people have recommended hollow knight to me when two of my least favorite genres of game are platformers and metroidvanias

I've been playing Disney Illusion Island cause its free rn with NSO and I was expecting something like the Illusion games on the Mega Drive. It's actually one of the most dull and boring metroidvanias I've ever played.

It might be helpful for defining what a "metroidvania" is and knowing the "-vania" part mostly refers to post-SOTN (And even then, only specific games) can help point to the flimsiness of the genre. Amusingly, you're right in that Castlevania games aren't meaningfully comparable as metroidvanias.

Castlevania 1 still stands at the top of my opinion, and honestly I think the only Classicvania games (metroidvanias excluded) that have a chance at dethroning it are Rondo of Blood, Dracula's Curse, and Haunted Castle (weird 3rd choice I know, but it looks fun and I think it's neat :3)

see the confusing thing about metroidvanias is they're either a knightmare or a pitfall.

Roguelikes are a solid choice if you're into that kind of thing: Hades/2, Slay the Spire, Balatro.
Hollow Knight / Silksong if you like metroidvanias and/or hard games
Several of the Ys games are great for action/adventure stuff. I liked Oath in Felghana and Origin
