Quite odd indeed. Nothing to do with ninja as far as I’m aware, though during my research I found out mii-dera had warrior monks called sōhei maybe that has something to do with his appearance here??? No clue why though

In order to cross the devastated Uji Bridge, Ichirai Hōshi politely apologises to the Mii-dera (三井寺) monk before nimbly leaping over his head!
Jōmyō-yama translates as 'pardon-my-bad-manners float'.
The 2 dolls are held in dramatic pose by special wooden pins.

On March 3, 1911, Sally and Gordon Fairchild walked from Kyoto to the Mii-dera Shrine at the foot of the Mt. Hiei. Sally writes they had a “soft spring day” for the walk, w/ the exception of a 20 min snow squall! Read the diary entry: https://library.bc.edu/iiif/view/bc-2022-172

A spirit so vengeful, he transformed into a malicious yokai.
Tesso was a giant rat that lead an army of rats, its body was hard like stone with claws and teeth of iron. The thousands of rats devoured numerous scripts and other objects within the Enryakuji until he was placated.

On a recent trip to Mii-dera, I saw they frequent boast of being "one of the four largest temples in Japan" but I can't seem to figure out what the other three are... Internet searches keep pointing me to the 大和四寺 of Nara, which is clearly unrelated. Any ideas out there?
