In Mesoamerica, rabbits are associated with the moon and fertility. The Nahuas believed that the deities diminished the moon's excessive brightness by throwing the rabbit on its surface. They also had rabbit deities called Centzon Totochtin, who ruled over pulque and drunkenness.

More than a mask, this is #Tláloc — the #RainGod who nourished fields & shaped #CyclesOfLife in the ancient #Mixtec civilization. The #turquoise inlay isn’t just 🪨, but sky & water fused in one, a sacred reminder that survival itself was divine.

Me: I'm going to finish this piece of writing today that's badly overdue.
Also me, stumbling on the Selden Roll: wow, let me just go down this rabbit hole of Mixtec myths and legends...

In my quantitative methods course, I have this data set on VOT in Mixtec. It's very simple in design (4 places of articulation, two word positions, 8 speakers), but you have to know what VOT is. It's perhaps not the very interesting linguistically, but it's phonetic data. Willing to share.

"Spanish, Bengali, Punjabi, Mixtec, Seke, and Kuranko are among the hundreds of languages spoken here. Nepalese dumplings and Korean noodles, Mexican tortas and Colombian empanadas, Thai curries and spicy South Indian vindaloos are just some of the many food choices." https://t.co/F3kDcetvwt

A bit depressing, if expected, that a Mixtec piece of art & history is owned by a British baron, loaned to a British museum, and most recently displayed in the US. I don’t want to even wonder how an Italian religious order got it. 😞

Congratulations and well-deserved!!

I made all these headpieces and did all the skull makeup in these :) I also took all of these photos save the pink photo, which was photographed by Andrea Hunter.

That's true, they never did. I designed it myself with a Mixtec influence.

Thank you! My primary reference is the codex Zouche-Nuttall 😃

#AztecsInkasMayas Instead of a lecture tomorrow, I'm giving an optional workshop on Aztec codices. We might even check out my fave deity, Pretzel-Coatl (Lord Pretzel-Snake), Mixtec, not Aztec.. Also here: a ritual scene, child punishment (the old chili peppers on the fire trick), & founding a town.

ah that's totally understandable! I believe the source I saw was the Mayans, Aztecs, and the Native American tribes of Mexico (likely Chinantec, Zapotec, Mazatec, and Mixtec) www.gardeningknowhow.com/tbt/history-... georgiawildlife.com/out-my-backd...

For Aztec and Mixtec peoples, Maarten Jansen and Gabina Aurora Péréz (a Mixtec scholar) in both English and Spanish are fabulous; some online; the 2007 “Encounter with the Plumed Serpent” and 2017 “Time and the Ancestors”; most publications listed here:

It's #Catrina season and I thought I'd talk a bit about them! Especially since there is such little Catrina presence on Bluesky.

Catrinas (female) and Catrins (male) are decorative skull makeup associated with Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico. Learn more about their names and history ~ 🧵

I think D sounds would start with an N so Dúkú would be more like Ndúkú!

And my Mixtec doesn't have any X sounds at the end of a word! So I think it would be more like Ñoxo, like a vowel at the end of it!

Other than that it does sound vaguely familiar!! Mixtec is pretty cool

It's actually a replica of the original currently found in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico. It's of mixtec origin, dating between 1200-1521 AD.

Also, many immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries don’t speak Spanish. Mixtec languages, for example.
