Note that this story also implicitly spikes the ableist "make eye contact" and "see and be seen" admonishment that ignores the existence of blind and low-vision people.

"If the transportation system doesn't work for everybody, it doesn't work." -- Anthony Foxx, former USDOT secretary

Someone just shared this in a meeting on WA state's Target Zero plan. Essential to plan system for nondrivers as well as drivers.

City engineers should be required to navigate the streets they design using a wheelchair or with an artificial impairment.

Maybe then we'd see safer, more inclusive urban spaces that prioritize human life over car convenience.

Intercity Transit in Olympia WA is awesome for a number of reasons, including this sign in a seat when we got on this evening to go home after walking downtown for dinner. Transit and civil rights have traveled together a long time.

"When you live in a city without a car it looks very very different. The question isn't how fast can I get there, it's can I get there at all?" Public testimony at TIB board from a young VanWA woman. Missed her name but I'll get it from the minutes later.

And when they say, "But not everyone can ride a bike!" you respond, "And not everyone can drive a car, including you someday. We all need to be able to get where we're going safely no matter how we move."

One mistake urbanists often make is arguing with people when they say they NEED their car for, frankly, whatever. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t, but I find the more effective point is that, if they have to or want to drive, it’s in their best interest that their neighbours can CHOOSE to NOT drive.

One of the key problems with MGH's parking is a lack of capacity for larger bikes, often needed by folks with mobility issues. The bike in the foreground has 2 PVC pipes; they are there to hold the crutches of the bike's owner, which she needs to use when not on the bike. (Bikes are mobility aids!)
