There's a fix for this!

Basically, Proton tries to make a folder called "compatdata" in every steam library folder, but there's files in there with names that won't work on NTFS.

The fix is making a link called "compatdata" inside the library folder that points to any folder on the Linux drive!

Same

THANKFULLY, I had a spare SSD which I put into my PC, installed & mounted it (ext4) and moved all my games from NTFS to said drive.

But yeah, Mint's kinda cool 👍

Yeah NTFS is not the best on Linux. My backup machine kept complaining about file permissions when using rsync.

You can get ntfs drives to be read properly by Linux steam, but if you let Linux steam run updates on games with big files. Expect file corruption. It's something to do with how NTFS handles fragmentation.

Direct copies of complete files will work fine.

That's absolutely not the reason, lmao. the reason is because Proton uses colons in file and directory names, which is an illegal character in NTFS.

If the drives are ntfs they won't properly work because Linux maintainers still haven't added proper NTFS support because "why would anyone use that?" While also telling everyone to dual boot...

Yeah, i had this problem but iirc it was because i tried to use my NTFS drives rather than Linux's filesystems (ext4 for example)

Yes except the Windows file permission system will be ignored and all the files will follow the mount settings. If you're in a dual boot situation, you have to disable fast startup in Windows so that it doesn't leave your NTFS disk in a weird state where Linux can only mount the files read only.

@[email protected] basically will it most likely be possible for me to move ~125 gigabytes of stuff from a hard drive formatted in NTFS without anything breaking?

(judging from this answer im guessing yes?)

ntfs works fine on linux?

I would try to use Windows on one SSD and Linux on the other if you can since it will save you the headache of Windows overwriting your Linux bootloader files often. Sharing files between both sides should work fine since Linux can mount Windows NTFS partitions. I would also recommend Linux Mint.

What about NTFS

I'm doing wonky stuff with it; I keep a gaming drive (ntfs) to "share" my game installs between Windows and Linux, and Bazzite does not care for that at all.

I've given Kubuntu and Bazzite a spin, I like Ubuntu in general, and I think I'm gonna give Mint a shot next.

Bazzite doesn't like NTFS volumes and doesn't play well with a dual boot situation. I think it's meant to be, essentially, a gaming console OS.

I'm Jim and I write to NTFS for a few days and then you should have a nice snoozle.

That is a worrying mixture of work and...other things. I actually write (debatable) concept Sci-Fi with a lean towards relationships over the technical. People drama, sci-fi wallpaper.

Introduce yourself using predictive text. You can try phrasing this in different ways (for example, "I'm ___ and I write about...").

Then tell us what you REALLY write about!

新しいディスクに移行するたびにWinRE回復領域を削除してシステムNTFSを伸ばして末尾にWinREを作る、という手順がもう面倒なのでパーティション構成を変えました

1. EFI 2. MSR 3. WinRE 4. System

Lol wtf is Windows so bad at I/O and why is it never addressed?

I swear if more tools reported file/write speed something would be done, but since it’s hidden no one notices how slow everything is with Win32 and NTFS.
