Specifically, it was the National Weather Service Modernization and Associated Restructuring, begun in the 70s, which completely overhauled how we predict and respond to rapid weather events.

I worked at NWS Cleveland in the mid '90s when it had become a central hub for Great Lakes forecasting as part of an organized effort by NOAA and the shipping community to improve forecasting for the lakes after the Edmund Fitzgerald. Some great NWS work especially at Cleveland made it a success.
In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

AccuWeather is owned by insane conservatives who are in line to profit when NOAA and the NWS funding is stripped away and privatized
The @accuweather.com acct hasn't posted here on Bluesky in two months but they did put this map together on their other socials, showing verified shots of the 11/11 aurora in all 50 states. Solar Cycle 25 has defied expectations and has been giving us a show for a year and a half.

Low humidity, gusty winds and ongoing drought conditions have combined for an elevated fire risk Thursday until 5pm.

NWS urges proper disposal of flammable items; caution if operating equipment that could create sparks; keep vehicles off dry grass.

The Beaufort Sea (north of Alaska, northwest Canada) has iced over, with less than five percent of the basin remaining as open water as of November 11. Compare that to the 1980s and 90s, when it wasn't uncommon for "ice over" to happen in September. Data courtesy NSIDC. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce

As the Senate is now in session working on the shutdown resolution bill, resharing my post from this morning with my sense of how this bill will affect NOAA/NWS, and why I still think the idea of moving NOAA weather research from a standalone agency to NWS is a bad idea. tinyurl.com/49dhaf56
