#Neotinea
Many of our butterfly tours, like this week's featured tour of the week, Spring Butterflies of Central & Northern Spain, also encounter #orchids. Always a happy find, nobody's day was ever made worse by seeing one of these beauties!

For #AnOrchidADay:

The rarest native Kent #Orchid of them all: Burnt (Tip) Orchid, Neotinea ustulata.

One of only three plants that I know of in the county.

Field surveys across Poland reveal that Neotinea ustulata survives mainly in dry, open grasslands on shallow soils. Habitat extremity, not conservation effort, emerges as the key to persistence of this rapidly declining orchid.

I’m reading ‘The Orchid Outlaw’, & loving Ben‘s description of these flowers, he uses phrases like raspberry ripple to describe them. I thought it was only me who saw ice cream & pink sauce 🍦. The orchids are burnt tip (Neotinea ustulata) taken 5 years ago this week in North Hampshire. #orchids

🌿 Coming soon: Preslia 97(2)! Highlights include:
🔹 Unexpected genetic richness and hybridization in aquatic Ranunculus reveals hidden diversity in Alpine lakes
🔹 Harsh habitats help: survival of Neotinea ustulata in Poland tied to dry, extreme grassland conditions

So, so many flowers--each day brings more--here are a few from that day: Aster alpinus (Alpine Aster), Pedicularis tuberosa (Long-beaked Yellow Lousewort), and Neotinea ustulata (Burnt-tip Orchid) 6/n

… that often follows periods of overgrazing! Inconsistent grazing regimes and rotations hit species like this hardest, the Burnt Tip (Neotinea ustulata) being another that is particularly sensitive. It also links to the oft-quoted 97% of our wildflower meadows having been lost since 1930. Very sad!

An early morning walk yielded a flowering Lizard Orchid and several Burnt Orchids.
Later the Col de Pennes wowed us with a mix of dry grassland and woodland flowers, Short-tailed Eagle and argumentative Duke of Burgundy butterflies

A few Burnt-tip Orchids (Neotinea ustulata) and a single Chalk Fragrant Orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea) braving the dry conditions at Parsonage Down, Wiltshire today. So dry - the anthills were scorched. 17-5-2025

1. Orchis anthropophora.
2. Neotinea ustulata.
3. Limodorum abortivum.
4. Orchis mascula.
