Alright, who have you got in your RSS feeds? I only have a few and I’d like more. Ideally the feeds where you genuinely read every single post they make.
Molly White would be in this list but I consume her stuff via podcast instead.

From the NetNewsWire blog about version 6.2:
"…there is one new feature of potential interest: we’ve added support for Markdown in RSS feeds."
Micro.blog feeds also now support Markdown in RSS, for any blogs updated starting today. If you haven’t edited your RSS feed, you’ll get it automatically.

these headlines crack me up. Great part of my RSS feed. NetNewsWire has an "open in News" share option when I want to read the story (part of News+ subscription).

Is there a way to subscribe to read paywalled Substack newsletters using an RSS reader? I use NetNewsWire and Feedbin. I know that I can have newsletters sent to Feedbin, but I don't want to change my entire Substack account's email address to the Feedbin address.

For those looking for Inoreader alternatives, here's my recommendations from the omake on my website! (ellen.zone/omake/)
Windows users, I apologize in advance that you are ultimately not going to find a ton of options.

Have you tried NetNewsWire? It was my reader of choice until it stopped working for a while and I switched to Feedly, but then it came back and works great on iOS

I came back to NetNewsWire after Google killed Reader. In hindsight, I should never have left. iCloud syncing between devices is 👌🏻

Do you have a favorite RSS app at the moment? I've been using NetNewsWire ( netnewswire.com ) for the last year or so. It's fantastic & free, but only available for Apple-flavored things.
I wonder if Zotero might work, for people who already use it a lot?

Obviously when compared to more egregious conduct this is small beer but why can Apple’s apps add things to Safari’s Reading List without prompting but I have to confirm every time I want to do that in NetNewsWire?

Как же я обожаю приложения, которые позволяют читать новости из различных источников в одном месте. В очищенном от рекламы и прочих отвлекающих попапов и кукисов минималистичном интерфейсе. Это так удобно.

if you're not afraid of curating your own content and want to keep algos and AI out of it, NetNewsWire is great and free and will sync across your Apple devices

Spoken Audio from Automator & NetNewsWire
For those of you out there who still use RSS, and in particular NetNewsWire, I've put together a workflow in Automator that can take the currently selected article and generate an audio file of the spoken text.
I never will wrap my head around AppleScript's peculiar syntax, but regardless I've made the workflow file available for download below.
I typically use this with Overcast which allows me to upload files to listen on the go.
Like most people, I want to read more articles than I actually do and this is little script will hopefully help with that.
It might take a while to complete, based on the length of the article, and it saves the final audio file to your desktop.
(warning you do need FFMpeg installed)

Please, for your sanity, spend some time setting up an RSS reader with sources you trust. Social media was never a good way to get the news, and it's only going to get worse.
I recommend Readwise, Inoreader, NetNewsWire, Reeder, and Feedly. I also use @flipboard.com as a supplementary algo feed.

YouTube in a feed reader is… better?
Two months ago, I deleted my YouTube subscriptions. I now follow YouTube channels in my feed reader instead (I use the NetNewsWire app). How does that work? Is it better?

On Aug 17, 2025, I decided to try self hosting my rss feed parser using miniflux. It's a neat little open source, fully free service that can be hosted on docker. It also supports adding your own css so you can make it look the way you want. I created a light and dark theme for it based on material 3 expressive. Check out the repo and star if you like it.
